๐ฆ HIPPO SAFETY IN ST LUCIA ๐ฆ
Sharing our town with the biggest locals! ๐ฟ๐ฆ
Seeing a hippo wandering through St Lucia is an incredible experience โ but please remember, they are WILD animals, not friendly neighbourhood pets. โค๏ธ
If you come across a hippo:
๐ซ DO NOT approach it for a photo.
๐ Keep at least 30 metres away.
๐ Avoid walking around town after dark โ this is when hippos commonly leave the estuary to graze.
๐ Slow down when driving โ hippos can be difficult to see on the road at night. Please listen and respect the security and volunteers who are there to keep you safe and ensure that the hippos get to their supper safely.
๐พ Never block their path or get between a hippo and the water.
๐ถ Never get between a mother and her calf.
๐ Never feed them or deliberately attract them to your property.
๐ง Never enter the estuary water โ there are crocodiles too.
๐ฎ And remember: a hippo yawn is often a warning, not a cute sleepy moment!
If a hippo is walking towards you, give it space and allow it to pass. Don't shout, chase, flash lights at it or try to get closer for that perfect photograph.
๐ธ The best hippo photo is one where both you AND the hippo get home safely!
St Lucia is incredibly special because we get to share our town with wildlife. Let's keep it that way by respecting their space. ๐ฆโค๏ธ
