At Afrikhaya we believe dreams start small ⚽🌍

Today we donated 4 footballs and training cones to the Sea Birds football team, so they can continue practicing and preparing for their future matches next year. 💪

Seeing the passion and excitement of these young players reminds us how important community, opportunity and teamwork really are. ❤️

We are proud to support local youth and cannot wait to see the Sea Birds grow stronger with every training session.

Little steps today, brighter tomorrows 🌈

Many of our guests know and love Zinhle from our cultural tours and Zulu food workshops at Afrikhaya.
But what many people don’t know is that she uses her income to help run a small rural preschool called:

❤️ UkhambaLwamaqhawe Day Care

“Home of Heroes”

A place where little children are cared for, fed, loved and given the opportunity to learn and grow 🌍✨

Here, children receive:
✨ meals
✨ early education
✨ learning materials
✨ a safe and caring place to grow

The preschool urgently needs support with:
📚 books & stationery
✏️ pencils and crayons
🧸 learning materials
🍲 food for the children

In the Netherlands, it’s King’s Day — a nationwide celebration filled with orange, music, markets and joy 🎉

Here in South Africa, it’s Freedom Day — a moment to reflect, celebrate freedom, and remember the first democratic elections in 1994 🇿🇦

✨ Two very different celebrations
💛 Yet both are about unity, pride and coming together

From vibrant festivities to meaningful reflection — all on the same day.

That’s what makes today extra special here at Afrikhaya, where cultures meet 🌍

Vandaag is het 27 april… en dat betekent iets heel bijzonders.

In Nederland vieren ze feest: Koningsdag.

Een dag van trots, vrijheid en herinnering aan de eerste democratische verkiezingen in 1994 🇿🇦

Why do hippos spin their tails? 🦛

A Shangaan legend, shared with us by an old ranger in Kruger National Park…

When God created the animals, He gave each one a place and food to eat.
The lion got the savanna. The crocodile got the river.

But the hippos asked for mercy —
to stay in the cool water during the day and graze at night.

God agreed… but only if they never ate the fish.

To this day, they spread their dung with their tails —
so He can check for bones.

At Afrikhaya, stories like these are part of the experience. 🌿✨

👀 This just happened in our garden… 🌙✨

✨ A magical moment in our garden… ✨
Last night we had a very special visitor: a bushbaby (galago) 🌙👀

With their big round eyes (perfect for night vision) and incredible jumps of up to 2–3 meters between branches, bushbabies are true acrobats of the African bush.

Did you know:
🌿 A bushbaby is not a monkey, but a primate more closely related to lemurs
🌿 Their name comes from their baby-like cry
🌿 They are completely nocturnal
🌿 They love insects, fruit, and tree gum
🌿 In St Lucia, you can often spot them… if you listen carefully 👂✨

✨ Een magisch moment in onze tuin… ✨
Gisteravond kregen we bezoek van een kleine nachtbewoner: een bushbaby (galago) 🌙👀

Met hun enorme ogen (perfect voor het nachtleven) en ongelooflijke sprongen tot wel 2–3 meter van tak naar tak, zijn bushbabies echte acrobaten van de Afrikaanse bush.

Wist je dat:
🌿 Een bushbaby géén aap is, maar een primate die nauwer verwant is aan lemuren
🌿 Ze hun naam krijgen van hun “baby-achtige” roepje
🌿 Ze vooral ’s nachts actief zijn
🌿 Ze dol zijn op insecten, fruit én boomgom
🌿 Je ze hier in St Lucia regelmatig kunt spotten… als je goed luistert 👂✨

Bij Afrikhaya zit je midden in de natuur — zelfs in de tuin gebeuren dit soort bijzondere ontmoetingen 💚
