🦖 🦴 Fossil Friday | Could Suchomimus be getting a new name?
One of the world's most famous fish-eating dinosaurs, Suchomimus tenerensis, may soon lose the name we've known for decades. Recent research suggests it could actually belong to the genus Cristatusaurus, a dinosaur described earlier from fossils found in neighbouring Niger.
Under the rules of scientific naming, the oldest valid name takes priority. If scientists confirm that Suchomimus and Cristatusaurus are the same genus, then Suchomimus would become Cristatusaurus tenerensis.
It's a reminder that science is always evolving. As new fossils are discovered and existing specimens are re-examined, even iconic dinosaurs can be renamed to better reflect their true place in the tree of life.
