🌊 DID YOU KNOW? πŸš‚

Did you know that before the railway reached Scottburgh and Park Rynie, a journey from Durban to the area could take up to SIX DAYS by ox-wagon? πŸ‚πŸ˜²

That all changed in 1897, when the Natal Government Railways completed its South Coast railway extension through Scottburgh to Park Rynie.

πŸš‚ The new railway reduced a journey that could previously take up to six days to approximately FOUR HOURS!

Building the line was an incredible engineering achievement for its time. Between Isipingo and Park Rynie, engineers had to construct 12 river crossings, with more than 1 kilometre of bridges in total.

The enormous bridge across the Umkomaas River alone stretched approximately 251 metres, finally allowing the first train to cross the river in September 1897.

And here's another fascinating little piece of history…

πŸ“œ In the original 1897 railway records, Scottburgh station was actually listed as "Scottsburg"!

The arrival of the railway helped transform travel along the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, connecting communities and opening this beautiful coastline to more visitors than ever before. πŸŒŠπŸš‚

It's amazing to think how different a trip to Scottburgh would have been more than 125 years ago!

πŸŒ₯️ GOOD MORNING FROM SCOTTBURGH! 🌊

A cool and cloudy start to Saturday morning at Pearly Shells. πŸ’™ It’s around 14Β°C early this morning, with a high of about 20Β°C expected today.

We may see a little rain or drizzle this morning and an isolated shower later. Winds are much gentler than yesterday, around 15–19 km/h, so thankfully the wild weather has eased!

Whatever the weather, the Scottburgh coastline still makes for a beautiful morning view. πŸŒŠπŸ’™

A dramatic start to Friday morning on the South Coast! Scottburgh is sitting at around 19Β°C, with a cool, wet and very windy day ahead and a high of about 21Β°C.

The south-westerly wind is the big story today, currently around 40–50 km/h, with strong gusts possible before conditions gradually ease. πŸŒŠπŸ’¨

Whatever the weather, you can't beat waking up to this view! πŸ’™

πŸŒ™ A touch of orange over Scottburgh tonight… 🧑

Just after midnight on 3 September, the waning Moon put on this beautiful display over Scottburgh as it makes its way towards the last-quarter phase.

That striking orange glow happens as moonlight travels through more of Earth's atmosphere, filtering out much of the blue light and leaving those beautiful warm orange tones. πŸŒ™βœ¨

Sometimes the best views happen when most of the town is asleep. πŸ’™

Goodnight from Pearly Shells. πŸŒŠπŸŒ™

🌊 DID YOU KNOW?

The 1987 floods were among the most devastating natural disasters in KwaZulu-Natal’s history? 😲

In September 1987, exceptionally heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding across large parts of what was then Natal, with communities along the coast experiencing enormous damage.

Roads, bridges and other infrastructure were washed away or badly damaged and the floods left scenes that many South Coast residents would never forget.

🌧️ The disaster became an important part of our region’s history and a reminder of just how dramatically our rivers and coastline can change after periods of extreme rainfall.

The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast has changed enormously over the decades β€” but photographs and stories from years gone by give us a fascinating glimpse into its past. 🌊🌴

It may look a little grey over the ocean this morning, but Wednesday is shaping up to be a warm one! πŸ’™

Scottburgh is already around 23Β°C, with a high of approximately 25Β°C expected today. The forecast is for humid conditions with hazy sunshine, so those clouds should hopefully give way to a brighter South Coast day.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Wednesday from Pearly Shells! 🌴🌊
