President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the country will return to an adjusted version of level three of the coronavirus lockdown - amid a surge in the virus. The level three restrictions will remain in force until the 15th of January next year - when they will be reviewed. They include a prohibition of indoor and outdoor meetings and the curfew being extended from 9pm to 6am. The new, more infectious variant of the virus appears to be fuelling the second wave of the pandemic. He was addressing the nation on the status of the pandemic in South Africa after a meeting of the Coronavirus Command Council at the weekend. President Ramaphosa says non-essential establishments must be closed earlier. Restaurants are to close at 20h00. President Ramaphosa says the adjusted level three lockdown includes the closure of beaches, dams, lakes, parks and swimming pools in hotspot districts. However, National Parks where control measures are in place can remain open. The president has also announced the suspension of alcohol sales again.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced further restrictions that will come into effect at midnight tonight across the country. This as the country experiences a second wave of coronavirus infections. Addressing the nation from the Union Buildings the President says part of the new restrictions is the limitation on the number of people attending large gatherings to 100 people for indoor and 250 for outdoor events. The curfew has been extended from 11pm to 4am and restaurants must close at 10pm.

Did you know that old den of iniquity #Dubliner on Long St is gone forever? I didn't!

But then I was invited to experience 💥NEW💥 Kennedy's On Long with all new crew, management, décor, #music+#food offerings.

To say I was blown away is an understatement. From GM Kyle to managers Lucien+Marlene to the #ServiceAmbassadors to the barman to the bouncer chao; everyone was polite, engaged, genuinely happy to be there(!), professional and supremely efficient, and not just to me.

I spent +5hours observing every interaction I could - same energy.

And the dinner!
You MUST try the cold beef fillet salad and the "Big Kahuna" #burger...fresh fusion food done fabSMURFulously!
That lemon cheesecake needs a touch more lemon, but OMG that beef salad dressing! Yikes!

Also very uplifting to see the city's party street with WAY less dodgy+dangerous folk, and absolutely ZERO shady entities allowed inside - a welcome change from the old space!

I highly recommend the new #KennedysOnLong..will def be back! 😄💝🇿🇦🌍

Cape Town has been voted the world's leading festival and event destination for 2020 at the World Travel Awards. This is the second time in three years the Mother City has been awarded the accolade having received the recognition in 2018. The city was up against Barcelona in Spain, Dubai in UAE and London in England amongst others. The announcement was made by Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato during the switching-on of the festival lights in the CBD last night. This year's event was held on a small scale due to Covid-19 restrictions. The event is held annually to usher in the festive season.

Plato says, “These are big cities across the world with excellent track records and for Cape Town to be named World's Leading Festival and Event Destination in a year when the entire world has grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic, is an illustration of the diverse offering this city presents to the world.”

“It would have been wonderful to share the award with the tens of thousands of people who would normally have lined up on Darling and Adderley Street for the annual Festive Lights Switch-On Concert, however COVID-19 regulations do not allow us to host the free open air event.”

Over the past year, Cape Town was able to host the annual signature events including the Cape Town Rugby Sevens, Tweede Nuwe Jaar Street Parade, Cape Town Cycle Tour and the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, among others. The Mother City was also able to attract new events including the Africa Netball Cup, the TP52 Super Series, Miss South Africa grand finale and the once-off Match in Africa with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

The Kaapse Klopse Karnivaal Association says it has postponed the 2de Nuwe Jaar celebrations which usually take place on the second of January, due to COVID-19. One of the Directors of the Association, Muneeb Gambino, says they are considering hosting the event on the 16th of June next year. He says they decided to postpone the event because of safety concerns for their members and the public, as mass gatherings increase the risk of transmission of COVID-19:

“This event attracts in excess of 80 000 people annually and we simply can't afford to host a mass gathering of this nature and by doing so have a super spreader event. We understand that the Klopse and the 2de Nuwe Jaar event is of immense importance to the people of the Western Cape and South Africa and this decision wasn't easy, but the priority is the health and welfare of our people.”
