There is a moment on safari when everything goes quiet - the engine slows, the dust hangs in the air, and the sky begins to burn.
This is the African Sunset.
Inspired by those golden hours on game drive, the first in our new cocktail series has been created to capture that fleeting horizon - where amber light melts into blues and the wild holds its breath.
At Kruger Shalati, that moment doesn’t end when you return from the bush. It is brought back with you - poured, stirred, and served as something you can taste.
The African Sunset cocktail is our tribute to the sky that greets you home.
A series of cocktails will follow, each one a story from the bush, captured in a glass.

Fatherhood doesn’t clock out when the kitchen doors open.
For Chef Vusi, Executive Chef at Kruger Shalati, it moves with him through early mornings, late evenings, and everything in between. But beyond the heat, the fire, and the rhythm of service, there is something deeper being shaped every day: leadership, patience, mentorship… and care.

To him, Father’s Day is not just a moment of celebration, but a quiet honouring of responsibility - the privilege of being entrusted with small, precious souls, and guiding them with intention.

In the eyes of his children, he is essentially running a kingdom of fire, feeding “a lot of people” with serious flames and even more serious energy. And while they’re not entirely wrong… they’re also only seeing the spark, not the full story behind it.

Because beyond the kitchen, there is a man who leads with calm authority, teaches by example, and fathers with the same steady heart he brings to everything he does.

Today, we celebrate Chef Vusi - and all that he holds, in and beyond the kitchen.

A new kind of travel is emerging.
One that seeks history, not just luxury.
Kruger Shalati is part of this story - a place once forgotten, now reimagined.
A railway bridge turned sanctuary.
A past preserved, not replaced.
This is what salvaged stays are about:
where heritage and modern comfort meet, quietly and beautifully.
Because the places that stay with you…
are the ones that have lived many lives before.

Trackside Dining continues in Chapter 3 - a celebration of seasonality, fire, smoke, and flame.
An open-fire cooking experience where generosity and authenticity guide every dish, and nothing is rushed. Slow-cooked over different types of fire and traditional equipment, each element is prepared with patience - allowing bold, smoky flavours to deepen naturally over time.
This is South African cooking at its most honest: unpretentious, deeply rooted, and made to be shared. The crackle of flames, the scent of smoke in the air, cast iron blackened by fire, and plates filled with food that speaks of tradition, comfort, and place.
Chapter 3 is where fire becomes the storyteller - carrying every flavour, every memory, and every moment gathered around the table.

To celebrate the centenary of Kruger National Park, we’re sharing stories from the original Kruger Shalati team - those who witnessed its beginnings and helped shape what it is today. Through their eyes, we return to those early days- when everything was new, anticipation was high, and something truly special was beginning to take shape and what this Train on the Bridge has come to mean to them.

Meet Lorrecia Masuku - part of the Kruger Shalati team and one of the original staff from the early days.
She shares what the Train on the Bridge means to her, how she didn’t know what guacamole was in the beginning, the early days of construction, and what the team would do in stressful situations. She also speaks about her favourite animal. A story of learning, laughter, and being part of something from the very beginning.

Stay tuned for the next story.
