Dolphin Beach in Jeffreys Bay and Cape St Francis Beach have retained their prestigious Blue Flag status for the 2026/27.

The announcement was made at the annual Blue Flag and Green Coast Awards Ceremony, celebrating coastal destinations that meet rigorous standards for environmental management, water quality, public safety, and educational outreach.

In addition to the Blue Flag accolades, Kouga’s Green Coast sites at JBay Supertubes and Paradise Beach retained their status, highlighting the municipality's ongoing commitment to preserving sensitive coastal ecosystems alongside popular recreational areas.

Blue Flag Operating Dates

Dolphin Beach (Jeffreys Bay): Will fly the Blue Flag from December 2026 through April 2027.

Cape St Francis Beach: Will maintain Blue Flag status from December 2026 through February 2027.

Driving Tourism And Protecting Coastal Heritage

Administered in South Africa by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA), the Blue Flag Programme serves as an international benchmark for sustainable coastal tourism.

Kouga Executive Mayor Hattingh Bornman welcomed the recognitions, emphasizing their importance to the local economy and community well-being as the region prepares for the upcoming summer holiday rush.

“Receiving this recognition is a proud moment for Kouga. Our beaches are more than beautiful places to visit, they are central to our tourism economy, support local businesses, and contribute to the quality of life of our residents,” Bornman stated. “With the summer season approaching, we want residents and visitors to enjoy our beaches with confidence, knowing that safety, cleanliness, and environmental responsibility remain priorities.”

Community Driven Conservation On The Green Coast

Kouga continues its partnership with the JBay Surf Alliance to support the Green Coast Programme at JBay Supertubes and Paradise Beach. Unlike traditional swimming beaches, Green Coast status focuses on protecting natural, sensitive coastal areas where biodiversity, community participation, and eco tourism take center stage.

Mayor Bornman called on both residents and holidaymakers to actively assist in preserving these spaces by keeping beaches free of litter, respecting coastal wildlife, and supporting ongoing environmental protection efforts.
