🌸 Beautiful plant with a horrible name!

The spring flower show at Phillipskop is full of spectacular little fynbos plants, and one of our favourites is Geissorhiza ovata.

Its delicate pink-and-white flowers are easy to love. Its name… not so much! 😄

But why is this beautiful little flower named after something connected with Greek architecture and roof tiles?

The unusual after-dinner ritual of a barn owl... 🦉

Have you ever wondered what happens to all the fur and bones a barn owl swallows?

Barn owls can swallow their prey whole, and often consume parts such as fur and bones that they cannot digest. Later, these indigestible remains are compressed into a pellet and regurgitated.

This video captures some rare footage of our barn owl regurgitating a pellet – quite extraordinary to watch! Judging by the number of pellets around our nest box, this happens often...

By collecting and dissecting these pellets, we can identify the remains of the owl's prey and gain valuable insights into what our owls have been eating.

A remarkable glimpse into the hidden side of barn owl life! 🦉✨

🌿 What makes fynbos, fynbos?

And how do you go about identifying species when you’re surrounded by one of the most incredibly diverse vegetation types on earth?

Participants on this month’s “Insights into the Fynbos” course have been exploring these questions through a series of talks, practical demonstrations, hand-on sessions and guided walks at Phillipskop.

The more we learn, the more we notice — and the more we notice, the deeper our understanding and appreciation of the natural world becomes. 🌱

Ultimately, that sense of wonder and awe inspires us to care for and protect the remarkable world around us. 💚

🐢 Tiny Tortoises at Phillipskop 🌿

This is the time of year to keep your eyes peeled for tortoises around Phillipskop!

Our most abundant species is the parrot-beaked tortoise (Homopus areolatus), which is endemic to South Africa and is the fourth-smallest tortoise species in the world. Fully grown, these little tortoises reach just 10–15 cm in length – but at this time of year, you may be lucky enough to spot a youngster, and they can be really tiny… sometimes no bigger than a R5 coin! 🐢

If you're driving to or around the reserve, please take extra care. Road traffic is one of the biggest threats to tortoises, and these small creatures can be surprisingly difficult to spot on the road.

🚗 Slow down, keep your eyes on the road, and give tortoises the right of way.

Every careful journey helps protect these tiny residents of Phillipskop. 💚

🦉 A fascinating glimpse into our barn owl pair’s feeding habits…

We were intrigued to watch this mealtime unfold on camera. One owl brought prey into the nest box, only for it to be promptly claimed by the other! Rather than eating it straight away, she guarded her prize for several hours before finally settling down to feed.

Once she had finished, she carried the remains out of the nest box. This behaviour may explain why we often find partially eaten prey scattered around the area near the box!

Nature is full of surprises, and we feel incredibly privileged to be able to witness moments like these in the lives of our barn owls, offering a rare glimpse into behaviours that would otherwise go unnoticed. 🦉✨

Caring for fynbos beauty, one alien hack at a time 🌿

Phillipskop is home to over 950 native plant species – but protecting this incredible diversity requires ongoing effort. Every time we head out with a group of volunteers to remove invasive species from the reserve, we’re making a difference — helping to conserve our precious fynbos ecosystem, and keep it thriving for all to enjoy.

This past Saturday, our alien-clearing efforts came with some beautiful rewards! 🌸 As we removed unwanted hakea, we were surrounded by spring colour and life:

🌿 Protea longifolia dotted the hillsides with their fluffy blooms, attracting sugarbirds as we worked.

🌸 Gladiolus debilis (Little Painted Lady) added delicate splashes of colour among the vegetation.

✨ Pauridia capensis scattered bright, shining stars across the fynbos.

Beautiful reminders of exactly what we’re working to protect — and good reasons to pause during the hack to appreciate the fynbos beauty around us!
