This Easter, we’re keeping things simple.
Slow mornings, eggs collected (and hidden again), pizza on Friday, and space to just be here.
If the busy Easter weekend isn’t your thing, there’s still a bit of room.
Not for everyone — but maybe for you 😉

The story of Thallulah the Wingless

There’s a thread that runs through San Gabriel.
It started with fossils on our farm in the Little Karoo.
Hours outside, pockets full of stones that felt ancient and important. I didn’t know their names — I just knew they mattered.
And car boot sales with my mom. Early mornings, long tables, mist in the air. Before I could even read price tags, I would ask, “Is this cheap?” — trying to work out what I could afford with the few coins in my hand. I think that’s where the collecting really began. Not about value. About feeling.
By ten I was collecting properly. Handbags. Vintage glasses. Pieces that felt rare or slightly unexpected. As a teenager I was forever thrifting — drawn to the one thing in the shop that didn’t quite belong.
There was a long sad-beige chapter. Safe. Tidy. Sensible. It made sense for that season.
But slowly — like learning to taste wine — I started understanding what I truly like. Not what’s fashionable. Not what’s “correct”. What feels layered. What carries a story. What makes a room feel lived in.
Developing a style is a lot like developing a palate. You try. You refine. You trust your instinct a little more each year.
The San Gabriel is simply the sum of all those years. Fossils, thrifted treasures, heirlooms, pieces collected slowly over time.
Still evolving. Just like me.

COOK’S CLUB AT THE FOOD STUDIO SAN GABRIEL HOMESTEAD
Occasionally the Food Studio Cook’s Club gathers in the San Gabriel Homestead’s Food Studio-kitchen to prepare a three-course meal. We share a leisurely lunch either on the veranda underneath the wisteria in front of the kitchen or in the old San Gabriel wine cellar. We pour wine and share tried and tested food secrets while using antique porcelain and silver tableware with French linen napkins reminiscent of generous times around country tables.
The lunch includes all recipes, the three-course cooking demonstration and wines.
