Spring has returned to Devon Valley, and she has arrived, as always, in splendour. The villa has shaken off its winter quiet and stands still in the morning light, looking magnificent, and making everyone who sees it feel that something rather wonderful is about to happen.

Every season asks something different of us.

Winter teaches us to linger, spring urges us forward - and somewhere between the two is a brief, almost imperceptible shift, when neither season has quite overpowered the other.

Here at the villa, the fire is still lit in the evenings, but the garden has begun to stir. Camellias give way to new shoots and day by day, the sun stretches a little further across the lawn.

In these inbetween days, we're savouring the last of winter without wishing it away, even as spring waits just beyond the gate.

August is the Cape's best-kept secret: The last chapter of winter, when Devon Valley wraps itself in mist and the vines stand bare and patient, dreaming of September.

This is not a month for doing, it is a month for the deep armchair, the second helping of dessert and the book you've been "about to start" since June.

Oscar Wilde once quipped that he could resist everything except temptation. We'd argue that a sunny spot in our Manor House's library falls into that category.

Like Alice Through the Looking-Glass, a circular window is not a window at all, but a porthole. Beyond it? Perhaps a Captain Nemo-worthy voyage beneath the waves.
