THE STELLENBOSCH ART MILE

Stellenbosch is no less beautiful in winter. The oak trees lose their leaves and something opens up - a haunting grace that makes you want to pull on your warmest coat and take to the streets. One street in particular: Die Laan.

Skirting the Eerste Rivier (First River) this is the home of the Stellenbosch Art Mile, a living gallery set in nature, where interactive installations change with the seasons and reward slow, unhurried attention. Stellenbosch being Stellenbosch, you will never be far from a steaming flat white to clasp between cold hands.

When you've looked your fill and watched the river trip its way over boulders, drive back through Devon Valley - home to a fire that's already lit, and a house warm and waiting.

Our ideal charcuterie board includes whatever can be scrounged from the pantry: homemade preserves and sticky syrups, cantaloupe, bunches of grapes, prosciutto, wedges of Brie and Chèvre, all arranged beautifully beside an open bottle of Le Grand Domaine red. The start of the evening's feast...

Oh, the places you'll go. 🎠

From the trampoline under the oaks to the zipline over the lily pond. From a croquet match on the lawn (one very small, very serious competitor included) to foosball in the Looking Glasshouse with a hundred-year-old tree growing right through the roof - Le Grand Jardin Villa does not do things by halves.

Here is a place that hands children a world and says: "Go on, then, explore it!" And somewhere in the middle of all that running and shrieking and barefoot chaos, the grown-ups find themselves caught up in the same playful spirit of childhood, where the world can be taken seriously, without taking ourselves seriously in it!

The 10th Annual Wine Tourism Conference takes place from 19 to 21 May at Cavalli Estate in Somerset West, asking the question: "How does wine tourism compete, connect and endure?"

We think the answer lives in places like this. A private villa set among the vines of Devon Valley, where the cellar is minutes away, the winemaker knows your name, and an afternoon can stretch effortlessly from a long lunch into a candlelit tasting with Debbie Thompson, Le Grand Domaine's winemaker.

We look forward to the ideas, innovations and inspiration shared over the next few days. In the meantime, our sister estate is waiting!

For three days in May, the Cape Winelands fills with books, words and ideas.

The Franschhoek Literary Festival returns from 15 to 17 May, and we think there is no better place to return to after a day of inspired conversation than our Wine Library - glass in hand, the villa's many bookshelves waiting just beyond.

If the festival stirs a deeper curiosity about the valley, continue it with our winemaker Debbie Thompson, from Le Grand Domaine, in a private barrel tasting or her legendary Drops of God experience, guided by 54 vials of scent in a candlelit cellar that is, frankly, its own kind of literature. πŸ·πŸ“š

Some houses ask you to behave yourself; Le Grand Jardin Villa is not one of them.

It belongs to the families who arrive with curiosity and find, around every corner, something that meets them there. A carousel that demands to be examined, a jade bath tub deep enough to disappear into, bookshelves that spill into corridors and stories that start at breakfast and are still going at bedtime....

This is a place for hide and seek and pyjamas at the table. For bare feet in the garden and tea that goes cold because something more interesting happened. For the particular magic of a house that gives children permission to be completely, wonderfully themselves. Those are, after all, the moments they remember most. The ones where nobody was anywhere else, and everybody was together.
