And finally a beautiful winters evening. It’s been pretty chilly here The fire has been ticking over and the boathouse has been toasty warm. It’s such a different feeling here in winter. The buzz and excitement of summer has gone and the quiet and sleepiness of the river has taken its place. Love a winter getaway.

To my knowledge there are no crocodiles in the river! In the short time we have had this must be the number one question I am asked from European and Australian friends. No crocs but plenty of fish!
The Goukou River is home to a variety of fish Cob(kabbeljou)
Grunter being plentiful.
Stonehaven lies next to The Goukou River and this divides Stilbaai into east and west. It is also part of a marine reserve, but in some specific area you are allowed to fish. Please check with marine authorities before throwing a line. Protect our fish.

Stonehaven River Lodge is just under 4 hours from Cape Town on The Garden Route. If you decide you want to escape Cape Town and really explore a part of SA, this is easily accessible. Fly into George and or drive from Cape Town and spend a few days relaxing then think about going on Safari at Gondwana Private Game Réservé. It’s just an hour away from Stonehaven and can tick the Safari box on your bucket list.

You know, to keep Stonehaven River Lodge looking amazing, lots of work goes on behind the scenes.
Much to the envy of my husband, Sven our Manager and the team, get to play with a 320D CAT excavator. Not my idea of fun but to the boys, cleaning out the overgrown dam using the excavator is almost every man's childhood dream.
Sure it's smelly, it's messy but once the overgrown lillies and reeds have been cleared, it will make way for more native birds and other creatures to return and in turn give us a tranquil area to bird watch. That is, if you need another tranquil spot

The Boathouse has been spruced up a bit with a fresh coat of white paint on the ceilings replacing the dark timber and the timber floorboards sanded and re-varnished.
The comfy dining chairs have also been updated in a deep sage green, in keeping with the surroundings.
