We are surrounded by magical forests and magical forests tend to be full of mystical creatures. One of these mystical creatures who has decided not to hide away from visitors is Uncle Sam, one of the oldest Ents, or tree men, of the forest.

Uncle Sam is a Cape Hard Pear tree. The Cape Hard Pear was one of the trees heavily exploited for its hardwood in days gone by. It was used for telegraph poles and wagon-making in the past. Today, it is mainly used for furniture and musical instruments. All parts of the tree smell strongly of almonds when crushed, and the dead wood gives off a glorious incense when burnt. The Xhosa name for this tree means “tree without embers”, indicating that despite its perfume, it does not make good firewood.

We recently had scaffolding up to do some work in one of the cabins and got this picture. It's an angle you won't get to see if you're staying and it shows the loft bedroom above the ground-floor bedrooms. The en-suite bathroom is around to the right.
