The Bloukrans Bridge, just down the road from Storms River Village, is not only famous for adrenaline-pumping adventure but also for its impressive engineering history.
Construction of the bridge began in the early 1980s as part of upgrades to the N2 national road, aimed at improving access between the Eastern and Western Cape. Completed in 1984, the concrete arch bridge spans the dramatic Bloukrans River Gorge and was, at the time, one of the highest bridges in Africa. Its bold design allowed engineers to cross the deep gorge without disturbing the sensitive indigenous forest below β a significant achievement for its era.
For many years, Bloukrans Bridge served purely as a transport route, admired for its scale and setting. In 1997, it gained international fame when commercial bungee jumping was introduced, transforming the bridge into a global adventure icon. Today, it stands as a symbol of innovation, connecting not just two provinces, but engineering excellence with world-class adventure.
