What to do if you find a turtle hatchling:
Call the hotline immediately for step-by-step guidance and authorisation to handle (endangered species so requires permission)
* Gently scoop up from underneath
* Place onto soft DRY towelling in a container
* Keep out of the wind
* Keep out of the sun if possible
* Make sure container has air holes
* If found on its back, gently turn over onto its tummy
* Don't wet, wash off, submerge or try to clean.
* Don't try to remove any growth or barnacles
* Keep pets away from them for the pets well being
* Handle them as little as possible to reduce stress and potential injury
* Always assume alive unless very obviously dead
Turtles breath air at the surface of the ocean so are safe out of water during the rescue and transport period.
Its crucial to get them to the TCC (Turtle Conservation Centre) as quickly as possible.
A travel permit is required for travel and handling so contact with the TCC via the hotline is essential.
