This weekend (29 - 31 May), for the first time since the flood three weeks ago, we are able to welcome a few campers back to the lower level of Sitrusoewer River Camp.

We first had to wait for the water to recede enough before the hard work could begin — raking away the thick layers of mud and spreading bark on the campsites that are booked for this weekend, from sites 8 to 12.

Kingfisher and Fish Eagle are once again accessible for guests, although unfortunately Blue Crane and Kiepersol will still need a little more time before they are ready again.

Slowly but surely, we are recovering and rebuilding after the flood. We are deeply grateful for everyone’s support, prayers, and patience during this difficult time.

Unfortunately, at this stage we are not yet able to take any new bookings for Wildsfees while we continue with the recovery process.

Yesterday, for the first time in a week, we were able to unlock Kiepersol to assess the damage and see what could still be saved. Last Thursday morning, before the floodwaters rose, we removed all the loose furniture except for the pictures and mirrors hanging on the walls.
We sent in four workers, who had to climb over the roof to get inside, so that the mud could be removed as quickly as possible before it hardened like cement. It was not a pretty sight, and if I had seen it myself at that stage, I would never have believed it could be saved. My son took the photos but never sent them to me, because he knew how much it would upset me.
Before the flood, we were in the process of upgrading the cottage with a larger bathroom and beautiful new floors installed by Troy from Top Carpets.
Yesterday around lunchtime, I finally received the photos from Hernus, and my heart sank. A few seconds later, two more photos came through, and I could hardly believe what I was seeing! Those four men, using ice cream tubs that I had sent along and a soft broom so the vinyl flooring would not be damaged, had scooped out all the mud and cleaned the cottage beautifully.
Miraculously, the floodwater had stopped just below the pictures on the walls and it seems as though the new vinyl floor survived! There is still a long way to go, and everything will need time to dry properly before we can do the final repairs, but we have new hope.

Over the past few days, Sitrusoewer River Camp has been devastated by flooding for the third time this year after the Sundays River overflowed its banks, but this time it was worse than we could ever have expected or imagined.

For the third time this year we had to evacuate Kiepersol, but this was the first time that the water entered the unit and rose to almost ceiling height. Last Thursday, while the water was already knee-deep in front of Blue Crane, we still tried to evacuate it as well, although we could not remove everything. Beyond that, we could only hope and pray that the water would spare the rest of the chalets.

The water levels are still too high for us to know exactly what will need to be repaired or replaced, but at least the water did not enter Fish Eagle, Kingfisher, or our new Silver Oak.

We are incredibly grateful that all of our workers, our long-stay campers, as well as Chris and Sanette (our caretakers) on the higher level, are safe. We are thankful that there were no guests who had to go through the trauma of evacuation while the water kept rising. We truly believe that God protected all of us through this disaster and that He will help us to overcome it as well.

We will get through this, even though it may take some time before our camp looks the way it did before the flood.

Thank-you Retseh Swart for this video.

The finfoot is back at Sitrusoewer River Camp! Yesterday afternoon Sanette Jansen van Vuuren, our caretaker’s wife, were so lucky to spot the finfoot the first time this year! She managed to capture these beautiful photos of the finfoot couple.
The African finfoot is a secretive waterbird, often heard more than seen. They prefer quiet, slow-moving rivers with dense vegetation, moving stealthily along the water’s edge. With their lobed feet (similar to a coot) and striking markings, they are truly unique — but incredibly shy, making sightings like this very special! Keep your eyes open… you never know what you might spot next at Sitrusoewer!

During the Easter weekend, a kids balance bike and a black toddler bike were left behind at Sitrusoewer River Camp.
No one has come forward to claim them yet, and somewhere there must be some very sad little owners missing their bikes 💔
If these belong to you, and you can describe them to us, please get in touch with our caretaker, Chris Jansen van Vuuren, on 084 888 8825 to arrange collection.
