🦒 Interesting giraffe facts

• They are the tallest land animals on Earth. Adult males can reach around 5–5.5 metres tall.
• Their necks have only 7 vertebrae — exactly the same number as humans! The difference is that each vertebra can be around 25 cm long.
• Their hearts are incredibly powerful. A giraffe’s heart can weigh around 10–12 kg and has to pump blood all the way up that enormous neck.
• Their tongue can be around 45–50 cm long and is usually dark purple/blue-black. The darker pigmentation is thought to help protect it from the sun while feeding.
• Every giraffe’s coat pattern is unique, similar to a human fingerprint. Researchers can use the pattern to identify individual giraffes.
• Giraffes are surprisingly fast. They can reach roughly 55–60 km/h over short distances.
• Their long legs make them powerful kickers. A giraffe’s kick can seriously injure or even kill a predator such as a lion.
• They don’t need to drink every day. They get a lot of moisture from the leaves they eat and can go considerable periods without water.
• Giraffes have ossicones — the horn-like structures on their heads. Males often use them to fight other males in a behaviour called “necking.”
