Even the driveway to the lodge can gift some pretty amazing sightings. This aardvark was spotted crossing our road, and then the railway track in the afternoon.

Thanks to Marion and Vera for sharing this lovely picture. Hope you are having a fantastic journey:-)

What an amazing 10 minutes in Pilanesberg, probably the most action packed 10 minutes of my time as a guide.

We returned to a carcass in a tree, hoping to find the leopard that had stashed it there. Instead we found a large male lion contemplating what to do about this incredible aroma coming form the tree. Well in no time at all, up he went, 4 meters or so. Lions are not to happy in trees. Good at climbing , less so getting back out. Once the lion dropped to earth again, we lost him in the long grass.
We then proceeded another 200 meters to find a mother and 2 large cub cheetahs, which is always special in itself. Then you could see the mom suddenly get excited. We thought we might get to see the fastest mammal stretch its legs. What we did get instead was the cheetahs chasing off a smallish female leopard. Poor thing had only just got away from the hungry lion, to disturb 3 cheetahs. Not her best day, but pretty much ours:-) What a 10 minutes that was!!

Big thanks to Ursula and Gerhard for the photos , and the wonderful day we spent together

We're back!!

A huge hello to all on our page. We have only just been able to access our facebook account after nearly 4 years. A big thank you to J ( you know who you are) for helping us recover this page.

In the last 4 years we have been well, and hope that everyone else has also made it through the covid and post covid era. Here are our new recruits since we were last online. friendly and beautiful. The little black one is still untouchable, but getting better after being badly abused in the past.

Look forward to posting more pics and stories from the lodge and game drives, and to hear from our long lost friends

So nice to say hi again:-)

We would just like to take the opportunity to say thank you to all the wonderful people who have helped us in trying to save our business. It has been over whelming, and so heart warming to see the support we have received, we are lucky to have had so many amazing people stay at Marula Cottage. A big thank you to you all.
The picture is of Phinias, with his thanks as well. We have managed to get some of the money to him, while he is in Zimbabwe. We hope the borders open some time soon, allowing Phinias and all our great friends to return to sunny SA.

We would just like to wish everyone is safe time in these difficult times. We hope that the time spent in isolation/lock down is a time to enjoy with loved one, catch up on all the things we were to busy for before, and reflect on what we can do to improve our own lives.
Here is a picture of our newest visitors at the moment, and how lucky we are. We have a family of bush babies that have made a bird feeder the first port of call each evening. Such joy these little primates are bringing us.
Please stay happy and healthy, and we hope to see you all soon.

Sirius, soon after leaving his mom.

This stunning cat was a favourite in Pilanesberg for a while.Easy to approach, not worried by the cars around him, and spent time fishing at one of the larger dams for a few months. Spectacular young man.
As easy as he was to find, it took me a few goes before having this amazing time with him. Thanks to Leo and Mieka for the lovely day, and thanks to Sirius for being so beautiful. We had a fantastic sighting, so close, and with no one else. It looks like he has moved further north in the park, and is harder to find up north. As always, leopards are difficult to find, but such a pleasure when you do.

Thanks to Mina for this lovely picture of a Brown Hyena. We were very lucky to see this in the middle of the day, which is not so easy. The good light and Mina's camera skills provided this lovely photo, and we also got to have a great sighting.

This is Dimo, and we were treated to amazing sighting of him a few weeks ago. We spent over 20 minutes with Dimo, (most of it alone:-)), and where even treated to a successful hunt. Stealth, speed and agility produced a quick kill on a young warthog. Thanks to Femkelien and Anton for sharing these photos, we had a fantastic drive in Pilansberg together.

This beautiful little flower, (Jamesbrittenia Bergea) is found on our farm, and only 3 other farms to date. It is very locally endemic, only existing within 10 km around us. It needs rocky crevices in iron rich soils. It can only be found in altitudes of 1000-1100 m above sea level. Listed as Vulnerable, we are very fortunate to it around the house.

Our White-Bellied Sunbirds are back. They nest in the garden every year, and are a bit early, but most welcome
