What an amazing 10 minutes in Pilanesberg, probably the most action packed 10 minutes of my time as a guide.
We returned to a carcass in a tree, hoping to find the leopard that had stashed it there. Instead we found a large male lion contemplating what to do about this incredible aroma coming form the tree. Well in no time at all, up he went, 4 meters or so. Lions are not to happy in trees. Good at climbing , less so getting back out. Once the lion dropped to earth again, we lost him in the long grass.
We then proceeded another 200 meters to find a mother and 2 large cub cheetahs, which is always special in itself. Then you could see the mom suddenly get excited. We thought we might get to see the fastest mammal stretch its legs. What we did get instead was the cheetahs chasing off a smallish female leopard. Poor thing had only just got away from the hungry lion, to disturb 3 cheetahs. Not her best day, but pretty much ours:-) What a 10 minutes that was!!
Big thanks to Ursula and Gerhard for the photos , and the wonderful day we spent together
