A gin and tonic in hand, a crackling fire at your feet, and buffalo grazing peacefully in the background. The African bush settling into another beautiful evening, the sky turning gold, and not a care in the world.

This is what safari is all about. It’s not just the hunt — it’s the moments in between, the wild surroundings, the good company, and the memories that stay with you long after you’ve left Africa.

Africa has a way of making you slow down and appreciate the simple things.

The final elephant hunt of the season, and what an absolute cracker it was!

As we close out another incredible hunting season, all of us at Dave Freeburn Safaris would like to say a massive thank you to every one of our clients.

To all the new clients who became friends this year, thank you for trusting us with your safari and for sharing these incredible experiences with us.

And to all our returning clients and old friends, thank you for coming back year after year. It means more to us than you know. When clients return, it’s no longer just a hunt — it’s friends getting back together in the bush.

Thank you to everyone who made the 2026 season one to remember. We’re already looking forward to what’s ahead.

The dry season in Zimbabwe is a special time to hunt. The bush is tough, the conditions are demanding, and every track and sign tells a story.
This hunt was made even more special by sharing it with a from the UK on his fifth safari with us.

After five safaris together, you stop thinking of someone as a client and you as the PH. You’re simply two buddies out hunting, sharing the early mornings, the long walks, the laughs, the anticipation, and eventually the moment everything comes together.
And the results speak for themselves.
A fantastic Livingstone eland and another memorable Zimbabwe safari in the books.

Five safaris. One friendship. Plenty more adventures to come.

There is something incredibly humbling about hunting an elephant.
An animal of such enormous size, strength and presence, yet when you are following him through the bush, there is an unexpected quietness to the experience. Every step is deliberate. Every sound matters. The bush seems to hold its breath.
And then comes the adrenaline.
That moment when you finally get close, your senses sharpen, your heart starts pounding, and everything around you disappears except the elephant in front of you. The anticipation, the respect, the focus — it is difficult to put into words.
Hunting elephant is not simply about the size of the animal. It is about the experience, the challenge, the respect for a truly remarkable creature, and the unforgettable moments that happen in the African bush.
A giant that can move through the wilderness with almost unbelievable silence — and an experience that stays with you long after the hunt is over.

10 mm of rain last night, and what a difference it makes.

This morning is crisp, fresh, and absolutely beautiful. There’s something special about stepping outside after a good rain—the cool morning air, the sound of the bush waking up, and that unmistakable smell of wet earth and rain on the sand.

A fresh start for the bush, and a reminder of just how precious these rains are.

A Harvest With Purpose 🐘

A memorable hunt with our hunter from North Carolina, harvesting a mature elephant bull.

Elephant management is one of the most complex conservation challenges facing many of Southern Africa’s private reserves. The reserve is legally permitted to carry only 30 elephants, yet the current population has grown to over 180.

When elephant numbers exceed the habitat’s carrying capacity, the pressure on vegetation, water resources and other wildlife becomes increasingly significant. Responsible, legal harvesting forms part of the broader management strategy aimed at bringing elephant numbers back toward sustainable levels.

This is not simply about taking an animal. It is about managing a population, protecting habitat and maintaining a healthy ecosystem for the wildlife that depends on it.

Every elephant harvested is done within the framework of the applicable permits, quotas and conservation regulations.
