The Great Fire of 1869, Southern Cape🦉

The Great Fire of 1869 swept through the southern Cape in early February. Fueled by a severe berg wind - a hot, dry wind blowing from the inland plateau - the fire spread rapidly across a region spanning over 450 km, from Meiringspoort through to Port Elizabeth.

The fire began around 1 February in Meiringspoort and by 9 February fires were raging downhill toward the coast in places like Knysna, Victoria Bay, Great Brak River, Plettenberg Bay, and Humansdorp. Driven by gale force berg winds - at times referred to as an “intensely hot hurricane” - the flames consumed forests, fynbos, farms, and homes.

At least 41 lives were lost in areas including Tsitsikamma, Humansdorp, and Clarkson, with thousands of livestock, cattle, sheep, goats, horses, poultry and wildlife perishing. The fire flattened homes, kraals, fences, fruit trees, stored food, and more. One report described Great Brak River as “a black mass of desolation”. Eyewitness accounts spoke of people fleeing in wagons, smothering their roofs with wet blankets to avoid ember showers, and hiding livestock in rivers.

This disaster occurred after a long drought that had been ongoing since 1862, drying out vegetation and creating ideal conditions for massive fires. Typically, berg winds are followed by cold fronts; in this case, heavy rains eventually arrived, ending the drought and extinguishing remaining fires, but only after widespread devastation.

The scale and speed of destruction prompted early forest management reforms. In response, the colonial government established a Forestry Department by 1876 and implemented conservation measures for remaining forests.
