The original house was built by Mr Jan Bekker, the owner of Bekker Meule after whom Bekker street was named.
Later the House belonged to Mr. Z Froneman who was mayor of Trichardt whilst residing here. Kurt Roos bought the house in 1992. Kurt, a direct descendant of Paul Roos the first Springbok captain on father side and the politician NC (Klasie) Havenga (who took SA off the gold standard in 1993) on mother side, married Crea Ciara Cassidy on the 11th of December 1993. The wedding took place in the present day bar. Ciara, being from Irish decent, received a set of crystal candle holders from the small town Ballynoran, in the country Tipperary, famous for its crystal.
During 1995 Kurt Roos and Johan Rosslee purchased the property with the intention of building four houses around the original house.
Following an idea that Johan got from two local business friends, he approached Kurt with the idea of a lodge which was accepted. The property was rezoned and during the month of July 1996 the soil was broken for the building of the first eight units.
Ciara being the woman of the house and the first manager, was given the opportunity to decide the name of the new lodge. Her Irish background, and the wedding gift from Ballynoran gave her the idea. The first slogan was also “Ballynoran – a gift from country Tipperary” which was later changed to “An oasis amidst industry” a comment found more than once in the guest comments book.
The first guest, Mr. Dirk Kruger stayed on Friday 7th of February 1997. The first Honemoon Couple – the Ellen Becks stayed on the 8th.
The first foreign guest, Mr. Steve Hunter from Phoenix Arizona, USA stayed on the 12th. This was the start of a relationship with Steve which lasted many years.
The restaurant and reception was finished in April and the remaining 12 rooms were completed in November 1997.
During this time Kurt and Ciara decided to leave for greener pastures. The first non-owner management couple was Rod Grant and Karl Silvo followed by Flip Lubbe and Gert Kemp who went on to manage Umuzi Lodge until 2005.
In 2001 the conference facilities, chapel and marquee were added.
The Honeymoon suite is named after the Irish writer Thomas Moore and the conference room after the famous poet William Yeats.
Years have come and years have gone but in typical Irish way the Bally has stood the test of time. It has become the “Grand Old Dame”. This is where it all started. Without Bally there would have been no Umuzi Lodge, no Lake Umuzi Waterfront, no Dwarsweg Lifestyle Estate, and no Merchant Hotel.
And she is still:
“An oasis amidst industry”
