The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign (16 Days Campaign) is a United Nations campaign which takes place annually from 25 November (International Day of No Violence against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day).

Other key commemorative days during this period include World Aids Day on the 1st December and the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, on 3 December of every year.

The theme for 2021 is “The Year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke – 16 Days of Activism – moving from awareness to accountability”.

Given the scourge of Gender-Based violence in the country, which is declared a national address, government is implementing the Emergency Response Action Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, which was announced by President Cyril in September 2019.

The 16 Days Campaign forms the centre point of government’s comprehensive 365 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

During the 16 Days period, Government together with civil society and the private sector will host a series of community and sector dialogues and activities to foster a collaborative effort in dealing with GBVF.

For communities
a. Be an activist against GBV in your homes, communities, work and positions:

Challenge cultures and practices that perpetuate gender inequalities and consequent abuse of women and children at personal and societal level.

b. Play your part:
Reject and report abusers- Act and don’t look away! Do not protect abusers, report them!

Sign the Pledge Against Gender-Based Violence. Do not engage in abusive activities and become an abuser- Stop abuse.
Challenge and denounce cultural practices that perpetuate gender inequalities.

Be sensitive and supportive to GBV victims - share helpful information and support causes near you.

Seek personal help to change harmful behaviors such as alcohol and substance abuse
Teach children values of gender equality.

Protect children from exposure to violence and harmful content on internet and social media, including po*******hy, sexual solicitation.

Develop policies that prevent and deal with gender based violence in your sector, workplace and communities.

Organise targeted community outreach and dialogues on solution towards a gender equal society.

Together, let us take actions to support the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.

ABOUT HOLE IN THE WALL
The Hole in the Wall at Coffee Bay is a unique structure with a huge detached cliff that has a giant opening carved through its center by the waves. The local Xhosa call this place "Izi Khaleni", which means "Place of Thunder".

The Hole-in-the-Wall is an extraordinary natural arch.
The formation consists of a tidal island containing a natural arch that takes the form of a hole pierced through a wall of sandstone and shale by the waves of the sea located at the mouth of the Mpako River, about 8 km due south of Coffee Bay on the Wild Coast Region, Eastern Cape in South Africa.

Did you know?
A hike that starts at the beautiful Coffee Bay beach and meanders along the coastline, passing Baby Hole and the Hlungwane Waterfall. Your destination – Hole in The Wall – is a natural rock feature formed after millions of years of pounding sea. The lagoon here is lovely to swim in.

ABOUT NELSON MANDELA MUSEUM

The Nelson Mandela Museum was officially opened on 11 February 2000, at a function to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the release from prison of Nelson Mandela in 1990. The birthplace/museum is situated at Qunu, along the N2 highway, south of Umtata in the Eastern Cape.

Did you know?
"I learned that courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear" ~ Nelson Mandela.

The Museum offers visitors an inspiring journey through the life of Nelson Mandela. Known affectionately as 'Madiba', Nelson Mandela is loved and respected worldwide for his tireless energy to bring about a better life for all.

Mandela insisted that the museum should not be a tribute dedicated to him, but should serve as a catalyst and springboard for the upliftment and development of the local community instead.

We are located in Nelson Mandela's city!

Mthatha or Umtata, is the main city of the King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality in Eastern Cape province of South Africa and the capital of OR Tambo District Municipality.

The city has an airport, previously known by the name K. D. Matanzima Airport after former leader Kaiser Matanzima. Mthatha derives its name from the nearby Mthatha River which was named after the Sneezewood (Umtata) trees, famous for their wood and medicinal properties.
