The focus at Horizon Adventures is on horses and quality riding. With a herd of over 100 horses, we are able to ensure that riders of any ability are well matched and have the chance to ride several suitable horses during their holiday. There are two outrides or riding activities a day. Morning rides last 3-4 hours (or less if requested) and afternoon rides are somewhat shorter. During your stay w

e try to ensure that you have the opportunity to experience all our riding options: outrides through the bush and across vast open plains, cattle mustering, game viewing on horseback, swimming on horseback, polocrosse and Western games. Jumping is also available on request. Rides are tailormade to suit the needs of our guests and we try to be as flexible as possible.

Overnight ride

This is a nice longer ride across the other side of the conservancy. Both buffalo and rhino now roam the plains and it is easy to see them on horseback.
With long, wide sandy tracks, this is also a great place for a fun extended canter.

Stay at a beautifully decorated, Africa-chic lodge, is welcome after the long ride. With comfortable, luxury bedrooms and facilities, including a swimming pool, it is the perfect spot to relax and later to enjoy the night sky from the fire pit.

Intermediate and above riders on either our African Explorer or Signature Safari, can enjoy this overnight experience.

Unforgettable horse safari.

If you are looking for an experience which will literally change your life and leave you with indelible memories, then this adventurous horse safari is for you.

It is difficult to explain the exact feelings and emotions you have when you watch a herd of elephant walk past you from the back of your horse, or you ride past a large tower of giraffe and see a leopard cub stalking. Out in the bush, we can’t predict what the animals will be doing, but we can promise it will be astonishing and amazing to watch every time. Being on a horse, brings you much closer to the wildlife, in a way, that you do feel you are part of your surroundings and in some way connected and part of it.

We all have such busy and ‘noisy’ lives these days, and spending 8 days on horseback on safari in South Africa and Botswana, is an incredible way of leaving all that behind and just be quiet and still for a moment. Listening to the crickets, owls, jackals, hyenas and lion roar at night is particularly special too. Our camps are varied and at some we do sleep outside, which also brings you even closer to nature.

I live here in Africa, and yet even when I am out on safari, I find it still makes me feel peaceful and that intimate connection with the wild, brings about an inner calm. For anyone, who is in love with horses, wildlife and wild places, you will love this experience. I’d go as far as to describe it as restorative for your soul. Skybreaker leading the herd through the water on the way to the yard for their morning feed.

In South Africa, our horses live out and roam freely on the reserve or in extensive grazing paddocks. They come in twice a day to be fed and checked, and normally bring themselves in.

Heree, they were crossing the spillway of the dam in front of the Horizon lodge en route to the stables. We have over 120 horses in the herd, which is made up of a number of different breeds and cross breeds. Over half the herd are a relatively unknown breed outside of South Africa - the Boerperd. These horses’ original blood stocks were Arab, Andalusian and Hackney. They are very hardy and brave and make the perfect safari horse.

Huge thank you to Laura Collett MBE for taking us around the stables at MARS Badminton Horse Trials, to meet her lovely stead, Bling. It is such a beautiful set up for all the competing horses and a real privilege for us to have a small window into behind the scenes. Laura and Bling, you were both brilliant to watch this weekend.

Sadly it is the end of an amazing few days at MARS Badminton Horse Trials. It has been lovely to be here at the event and to be able to chat to so many people over the weekend. Thank you to everybody who came to see us and chatted about safaris. And we absolutely loved meeting all your doggies!!😁

Last day at Badminton Horse Trials!
