Waarom wij nooit uitgekeken raken op Zuid-Afrika. Waarom kiezen zoveel reizigers voor Zuid-Afrika als eerste kennismaking met Afrika? Omdat je hier ongelooflijk veel kunt combineren. Wildlife, indrukwekkende natuur, mooie routes, steden, kust en bijzondere accommodaties. Maar misschien nog belangrijker: elke reis kan helemaal anders zijn.

Waarom Zuid-Afrika?

Omdat je hier in één reis ontzettend veel verschillende ervaringen kunt combineren.

🦁 Wildlife en safari
🚙 Mooie self-drive routes
🌿 Ongerepte natuur
🏔 Bergen en indrukwekkende landschappen
🍷 Goed eten en wijn
🌊 Kust en stranden
🔥 De warmte van Zuid-Afrikaanse gastvrijheid

Maar misschien is dat nog niet eens het mooiste.

Iedere reis kan hier totaal anders zijn.

De één wil zoveel mogelijk wildlife zien. De ander wil juist rustig reizen en bijzondere accommodaties ontdekken. Sommigen willen een avontuurlijke roadtrip, anderen combineren Zuid-Afrika met Botswana, Namibië of Zimbabwe.

Daarom geloven wij niet in één standaardroute.

Welkom bij Lowes Africa! 🇿🇦🌍

Wij zijn Nederlanders in Zuid-Afrika en helpen avontuurlijke reizigers om hun droomreis door Zuidelijk Afrika werkelijkheid te maken.

Misschien droom je al jaren van een safari. Misschien wil je met een huurauto door Zuid-Afrika reizen. Of misschien wil je meerdere landen combineren, maar weet je niet waar je moet beginnen.

Daar helpen wij graag bij.

Van een persoonlijke routeplanning tot het regelen van een deel of zelfs je volledige reis: jij bepaalt hoeveel begeleiding je nodig hebt.

The night before we flew out of Amsterdam for the last time, we had everyone we love around our table.

Lotte's parents. Wesley's sister. Lotte's brother and his family. A small group of friends who'd been there through everything.

Nobody made a big speech.
Nobody needed to.

We'd miss it less than we thought - the restaurant life, the apartment, the city.

These people?
We'd have taken every single one of them with us if we could 💞.

Home isn't a city.
Home is the people.

And we're blessed, because so many of those same people have already found their way to us here. Sitting around a different table. Under African skies. Seeing the life we chose.

A year later - we've never once looked back.

To the Kruger National Park, to Botswana, to the next destination on the list. We get it; Africa is massive. The list is long and the excitement is real. But here's what 10 years of overlanding taught us;
the ones who slow down first - always have the better trip.

Two nights in the Waterberg before you go.
Decompress, acclimatise, sit by the fire.
Meet us - the people who planned every detail of your journey. Ask every question you forgot to ask before you left home. And wake up to a bush sunrise before your adventure even officially begins.

5 things we wish someone had told us before our first self-drive safari in Southern Africa.

We've driven these roads ourselves — from the Waterberg to Kruger, Botswana, Zimbabwe and beyond. These aren't tips from a travel blog. They're lessons from our own mistakes.

👉 1) Your car will become your home. Pack like it!
Roof tent, fridge, cooking gear, clothes, snacks, spare tyre. It sounds like a lot — because it is. The cars that struggle are the ones packed for a holiday, not an expedition. Think: everything you need, nothing you don't.

👉 2) The best spots aren't on the first page of Google. We found our favourite campsites by asking locals, not searching online. The hidden gems exist — they just don't advertise. Ask at the gate, ask your neighbours at the braai. That's where the real tips live. Now Lowes Africa can be yout local and show you the perfect spots that suit your travel style.

👉 3) Border crossings will take longer than you think. Plan your day around them. Some crossings take 20 minutes. Others take 3 hours. It depends on the day, the queue, and whether your paperwork is in order. Always cross in the morning. Never cross on a Monday or after a public holiday. And bring cash — some borders still charge fees in local currency only.

👉 4) Google Maps will lie to you. Lovingly, but consistently. 2 hours' on Google Maps can mean 4 hours on a dirt road after rain. Always check: is this road tarred or gravel? Does it cross a river? Is it passable in a 2WD or 4WD? We use Maps offline + iOverlander for the real picture. Download before you go — signal disappears fast.

👉 5) Stock up before you think you need to. The next town is further than it looks. In Southern Africa, 'the next town' can be 200km away — and the shop there might close at 1 PM on Saturday. We always fill up at 50%, stock water for 2 days ahead, and never pass a farm stall without stopping. Some of our best meals came from the side of the road.
