Tshwene Lodge A luxury safari lodge from Rare Earth Retreats, situated in the heart of Welgevonden Game Reserve

Surrounded by magnificent rock outcrops, Tshwene Lodge is a secluded oasis in the rugged valley of the Taaibos River. The Chacma baboon, after which the lodge is named, calls late at night to alert of pending danger. Rich in bird life, Tshwene offers peace and tranquillity for those seeking to get away from it all. The five strategically located suites all offer exhilarating views of the valleys below and the hills beyond. Nestled within a rock outcrop, Tshwene Lodge is intimate and peaceful. The main facilities include two lounges, pool, indoor and outdoor dining areas set on a huge wooden patio with magnificent views. WORLD RHINO DAY “Keep the five alive.”

Today we pay homage to the horned herbivores, gentle giants and unicorns of the wild. We honour the world’s five remaining rhinoceros species and recognise the vital work driving their survival. How many of the 5 rhino species have you seen in the wild?

Welgevonden Game Reserve, home to Tshwene Lodge and Ekuthuleni Lodge, protects two of the five rhino species and supports one of the largest white rhino populations of any private reserve in Africa. The critically endangered black rhino also finds sanctuary here. Thanks to the relentless dedication of the reserve’s anti-poaching and management teams, these prehistoric creatures continue to thrive, offering our guests an unforgettable glimpse into the wild.

Encountering a rhino in its natural habitat is deeply humbling. It instils a profound respect for nature and reminds us why wild spaces must stay wild.

An incredible close-up encounter of the African leopard (Panthera pardus pardus) in the Welgevonden Game Reserve game reserve. 

Have you spotted these magnificent creatures in the bush?

Because Welgevonden is a fully enclosed, 37,000-hectare private reserve, it serves as a vital sanctuary for free-ranging leopards. Often referred to as the ‘ghosts of the bush,’ these elusive cats are remarkably well camouflaged in the bush and spend most of the daylight hours resting high up in trees.
