Every afternoon game drive is different, but the start is usually the same. 🌿

Waiting for your guide at the main lodge, having a coffee or flipping through one of the wildlife books before heading out.

And then you just see what the afternoon brings.

A giraffe on the plains, a wildebeest crossing the road, a mother rhino with her little one… or a quick stop because your guide spotted something you would probably never notice yourself, like dung on the road, and suddenly you’re learning how to tell which animal left it behind.

You never really know what you’re going to find out there.

Do you need malaria tablets for a safari in South Africa? 💊🦏

The answer is: it depends entirely on where you go.

Some of South Africa’s most famous safari destinations, including Kruger and the Greater Kruger region, are situated within a malaria-risk area.

But there are also places where malaria tablets don’t need to be part of your safari plans at all.

Have you ever thought about taking your little one on safari? Or maybe you thought they were still too young?

We welcome many young families and their little ones, and some of our favourite moments are watching them discover the bush together.

Seeing a child’s face when they spot their first wild rhino, elephant or giraffe is something special. But seeing the parents experience that moment through their child’s eyes makes it even better.

Family is everything to us. And safari doesn’t have to be something you wait years to experience together.

Sometimes, the little ones make it even more memorable. 🤎

Happy World Elephant Day! 🐘

Today we celebrate the giants of the African bush, and an animal that has a special meaning to Laluka.

The elephant has been part of our identity from the beginning. The name Laluka means “to grow in wisdom,” and few animals represent wisdom quite like the elephant.

They are highly intelligent and deeply social animals. They communicate in ways we cannot always hear, remember places and individuals for years, care for their young as a family and learn from older generations.

Watch a herd for long enough and you begin to see it: the way they communicate, protect, teach and move together.

That connection to wisdom is why the elephant became the symbol of Laluka.

And having them roaming freely through Welgevonden, sometimes right in front of the lodge, makes that symbol very real.

In many places, rhinos are dehorned to help protect them from poaching.

In Welgevonden, they still carry their horns.

That is possible because of the intense conservation work happening behind the scenes. From monitoring and anti-poaching efforts to the daily commitment of the teams protecting this reserve.

Seeing a rhino with its horn is powerful.

Not only because of its beauty, but because it reminds us how much care, responsibility and protection is needed to keep these animals safe in the wild.
