How do you style a dining table when you're not entertaining? Here are some ideas and inspired ways to add personality to your dining table - without too much effort.

An arrangement of fresh flowers always adds to a room, and the dining table is the perfect place for a vase of fresh blossoms or foliage. But potted plants are just as good for bringing a touch a nature indoors.

Beautiful orchids are another favourite as a centrepiece for the dining table. These plants are low maintenance and are available in jewel-toned flowers and sculptural forms.

If you like the idea of a natural centrepiece for your dining table, cut large leaves such as philodendron and place these in a vase, and these will last for a couple of weeks. Or collect autumn foliage to make a colourful display.

Add personality, colour and texture in an instant with an attractive tablecloth. Top off the table with decor and accessories in complementary colours, or add a splash of contrast colour for eye-catching interest.

The go-to for interior designers is to take a grouping of like objects of differing heights and combine these into a wonderful arrangement - a vignette of sorts for the dining table. The items you choose for the arrangement can be your favourite collectables - an arrangement of similarly coloured vases in assorted shapes and heights, or items that go with your personal style.

Property advice: Getting ready to sell

As buyers are becoming increasingly aware of trends and gain access to more homes than ever before, selling a home is a competitive business. A well-known and oft-used method abroad, home staging is still relatively under-utilised in the local market. We reached out to Lucy le Roux, founder of Johan...

Here’s how you can make your space work for you.

Decide on the space in your home
When deciding on a spot for your home office space, do not turn to the most overlooked corner of the home. Choose a space that is comfortable, desirable to be in and a space that will motivate you. Converting a space in your home as a work office requires your home to have the dedicated space available for your use.

Ensure good lighting
Be sure to choose an area that is well-lit, receives plenty of sunshine and especially fresh air. An added benefit would be to have a view that you are able to cast your eyes on when working.

Make sure you are connected
Working from home requires you to be connected almost all the time, whether it be for client communication, employer communication or an actual process your job requires. Therefore, make sure you have access to several plug points, and good cell coverage and network coverage as it is crucial to you adequately executing your tasks.

Have some extra space
If working from home is part of your full-time job and your work includes client meetings, it is important to ensure you have extra space to add additional furniture, be it a comfortable chair or sofa and coffee table to conduct those meetings.

Make use of décor that is appealing
Finally, when deciding on your work office, aim to use colours and décor pieces that you find to be inspiring. If you are most inspired when using bright colours or perhaps having a fish tank around, then make sure that it is incorporated into the look you are going for. On the other hand, if you are most productive when being surrounded by calm, pastel colours and unison coloured furniture then opt for that.

Here are some bathroom organising ideas to calm the clutter…

Open storage
Loo rolls, towels, toiletries, bath toys – a three-tier shelving unit is a clutter buster’s dream. And you can always find some wall space in a bathroom to put one up.

Shower caddy
Free up the shower floor by storing shower gels and sponges on shelves and hooks. It will also make cleaning the shower a whole lot easier.

Laundry bag
A big-family essential that seems to fill up far too quickly – opt for a soft but spacious laundry bag with handles so it can easily be dragged around and packed away when necessary.

Over-the-door storage unit
A row of hooks for damp towels and other bathroom essentials (like your favourite fluffy robe). You can also hang it up on the inside of your bathroom cupboard door to hold bits and bobs – and everything will be conveniently out of sight!

Baby, it’s cold outside and, truth be told, our South African homes are often not much better indoors. Our houses tend to be cold, but warming them up can be easier than you think – these décor pieces look chic and add warmth to your home (literally). Add a few of these pretty winter décor essentials to your space and it will be cosier and more inviting in no time at all.

Shaggy rugs
Most of our homes have tiles or wooden floors (hello convenient cleaning!), and not only does it make a room feel colder, it actually also makes it look colder. Add in a fab fluffy rug – the shaggier, the better when it comes to winter – and your space and feet will feel warmer in no time.

Throw in a throw
A chunky knit or delightfully fluffy throw is not only incredibly practical, but it looks pretty too. Come the winter months, drape one over the back of each sitting spot in your lounge; your couches and chairs will get an instant make-over, and you and your guests will have warmth right at your fingertips. Depending on your colour scheme, think about getting throws in rich jewel tones or romantic shades of grey for a chic winter décor touch.

Scatter cushion switch up
We’re always game to go shopping for scatters; they’re useful, pretty and an incredibly affordable way to give a room a face-lift. In winter, you can go to town with texture, so look for scatters in chic velvets, faux furs or lovely chunky knits (or a mix of all three!); you might not think anything of them when you see them in the store but add them into your home and it’ll look oh-so cosy. Again, you can opt for greys, charcoals and blush pink, or go opulent with jewel tones; either way, you won’t be sorry!

7 Tips For Arranging Your Sofa Cushions

CREATE A STRONG BASE
Start the process by placing two large matching cushions on each end of the sofa, in either a solid colour or a print.

LAYER UP
Layer with cushions that are slightly smaller in size and in a different fabric. Matching cushions will create a more formal look while two cushions that don’t match have a more eclectic feel.

ADD SOMETHING DIFFERENT
Include a pillow that is totally different to all the others. It can be a different colour, shape or texture.

STICK TO ODD NUMBERS
The magic numbers for scatter cushion arrangements are 5 cushions for an average sofa and 3 for a smaller one.

BALANCED ASYMMETRY
Asymmetrical balance is ideal.

MIX PATTERNS
The trick to mixing patterns is of for there to be a cohesive idea behind the mixture.

PLAIN & SIMPLE
If patterns are just not your thing then go for cushions that are bold in colour or vary in texture.

Property advice: 3 Tips for New Investors.

My first investment was a small one—a two-bedroom house in Portland, Oregon. At the time, it was a such scary idea to purchase that property, because it felt like I was giving up a lot to make that investment. In reality it was just a few thousand dollars. But that’s the irony of the advice …

Décor trends say we'll be buying less and spending more time making our homes our sanctuaries. Here's a summary of renowned Dutch trend forecaster, Li Edelkoort’s décor forecast.

Sharing is caring
We want to try to make the world a better place and as a result of this, fashion (which is all about the self) is less important.
There is a hunger to elevate the soul and for the spiritual, which can be religious or not. Our souls want tenderness and our nesting instincts are strong.

In search of light
Since the community is more important than the individual, décor is sparse and luxury becomes obsolete.
“Buy less, buy better and precisely,” says Li.
Our desire to elevate our souls results in a lighter colour scheme – whites, neutrals, light greys and pastels, such as mint green and dusty pink are popular. There is an emphasis on natural light for interior spaces and interior plants remain on trend.

In praise of shadow
The counter-trend of light is dark and moody – which is a manifestation of our need for concentration, balance and simplicity.
Shadows are a design element and used to create emotion.
The most obvious trend is the reversal of colour – what used to be white is now black or dark, such as walls, sanitary ware, taps, kitchens, crockery, appliances and tea towels.
