The spoonbills have company.

Down at the water there's a darter keeping watch from a stump, a heron stalking the long grass, and a bird hide where you can sit as long as you like without anyone asking why. Fishing is allowed on the estate, so pack a rod.

Yesterday you saw the main bedroom. Here's the rest of the house.

A long table for slow dinners. A lounge facing the bush. A proper kitchen, because it's self-catering and nobody's rushing you. A second bedroom with two single beds, and a bathroom for each bedroom, so nobody queues in the morning.

Inside: proper beds, a lounge that looks straight out at the bush, and more space than you'll ever need, all to yourselves. Self-catering, so dinner happens when you're hungry, not when a kitchen closes.

Op die stoep, koffie in die hand, besef jy skielik jy het vir 'n uur nie aan jou foon geraak nie. 'n Private bosveldlodge naby Bela-Bela, net julle, en die bosveld wat stil word om julle.

Yesterday's nyala brought friends.

Some mornings the neighbours come to you: nyala strolling past the boma, a wildebeest at the trough, a kudu bull pretending you can't see him. The estate is around 2,000 hectares, and some days they still choose the patch next to the house.

Keep the coffee close. The patio is the best seat.

He didn't even look up.

A nyala bull, head down in the dappled shade, spiral horns catching the light, orange socks and all. Close enough to count his stripes, and he couldn't have cared less.
