The building of ‘Mashamba Nyumba’
Mashamba Nyumba in Swahili means ‘Plantation House’ After buying the piece of land that which was totally covered in pine trees like a plantation. Machetes were used to hack through the snake infested overgrowth, felling over 300 pine trees to make a pathway to a very large ancient pine tree. Climbing up the tree, the magical view of Langvlei Lake and the mountain range behind was exposed.
The house was designed with deep covered verandas around the north and west side to give space to sit in the shade to admire the stunning view and the sunset. The house took just under one year to build with the help of local builders, J Gee Construction. Working closely with the architect, Johan Grobler and Chrissie a unique spacious Moroccan/French style home was created with a sunken walled Moroccan garden with a pool as the central feature.
Floor and wall tiles were imported from Morocco with the help of Kundra from Moroccan Warehouse in Cape Town. The clay roof tiles were imported from Italy and the intricate Moroccan railings were designed and handmade with help from Christo and his team at ‘All Steel’ in George. The feature walls inside the home and special paint effects were created by Mark from Paintsmiths in George and executed beautifully by Pieto the painter. The lavish velvet curtaining with blackout lining in the bedroom suites were handmade by Vanessa and her team at The Curtain and Blind Studio in George.
All the ensuite bedrooms have access to the outside and wonderful views. This spacious dream home in Wilderness welcomes guests from all over the world who wish to experience the tranquillity and beauty of this special place.
