IKhayalamafu Mountain Retreat iKhayalamafu Mountain Retreat - two self-catering cabins (2-sleeper) tucked into the Central Drakensberg, Ch*****ne Valley, KwaZulu-Natal.

Fireplaces, mountain views, indigenous forest, incredible hiking trails, and total quiet. Our love affair with the Drakensberg started over 35 years ago. In 2003 we realized our dream of creating a mountain eco-estate high in the Monk’s Cowl Reserve, closer to paradise than anywhere else in the Ch*****ne Valley. We are completely off-grid and run on solar and hydro power, our water comes directly from fresh streams and is only five minutes old when it reaches us, we harvest our own wood for fireplaces and braais, we have eradicated all alien plant species, we grow all our own vegetables, and we even manage our own hives for some of the world’s sweetest honey. Hiking through mountains and forests, under waterfalls and over ancient rocks; wildlife on your doorstep; log fires; moonlit and starry nights. All this and more, even free Wi-Fi. Your cabin is fully equipped. Peace, quiet, solitude, and space for reflection.

Here is an example of the kind of magical views you can marvel at during your hike from Nandi's Falls, through the Hlatikulu Forest, to the lovely Sterkspruit Falls.

Waterfalls, indigenous forest, and majestic mountain peaks at every turn take your breath away (as do the uphill parts😅).

It's one of many trails that conveniently start right from the cabins - no extra fees and no driving required. Just lace up after breakfast and go 🥾

"In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." John Muir

We still have a few dates open, and stays booked this week are 20% off. If you've been waiting for a sign to get to the mountains, this is it! 🏔️

Which would you pick first: the waterfall hike, or a slow coffee on the deck while birdwatching? 👇

This is what iKhayalamafu looks and sounds like this week...

Mist hanging over the mountains, super-vivid greens, rock pools overflowing and full-to-bursting streams rushing through the forest. And the wildlife has been making the most of it too 🐦

We’ve been seeing plenty of our familiar Cape White-eyes around the cabins - tiny, busy little birds easily recognised by the neat white ring around their eyes. They feed on insects, fruit and nectar, and are often spotted flitting about in pairs. We've also seen many a sunbird although those can be trickier to capture since they're speedy little things that seem to know when they're being filmed!

There’s also red-jacketed grasshoppers 🦗, along with interesting little mushrooms popping up amongst the damp leaves and moss.

And all of these photos were taken just a short walk from the cabins. Venture a little deeper into the mountains and there’s even more to discover. Our guests have direct access to both our private trails and the surrounding public trails - no driving anywhere or paying entrance fees before you can start exploring. Just put your boots on and go!

Come and see what the mountain looks like for yourself 🌿

Here's a glimpse of iKhayalamafu through our guests’ eyes:

We absolutely loved receiving these photographs from our recent guests, Annie and Simon, who spent some of their stay exploring the mountains, valleys, waterfalls and trails surrounding iKhayalamafu.

There’s something very special about seeing this landscape through the eyes of those who come to stay with us - and these photos capture beautifully just how wild, vast and wonderfully untouched this corner of the Drakensberg feels 💚

A little Central Berg gem worth knowing about 🌿☕🍰

We recently popped into Scrumpy Jacks and discovered one of those wonderfully unpretentious places where you can easily lose a few hours.

The food is wholesome, homemade and made from scratch with fresh ingredients - think proper burgers and toasties, delicious milkshakes, great coffee and, of course, their kaaskoek (cheesecake!) 🍔🥤☕🍰

But there’s much more to Scrumpy Jack’s than lunch. Have a wander through their little shop, where you’ll find everything from hats and locally made preserves to honey products, take a peek at their fascinating glass beehive 🐝, or really settle into the slower pace of the Berg with a massage at their spa.

And then there are the views… 💚

Owners Deon and Marelize are an absolute delight and make the whole experience feel wonderfully warm and personal.

Definitely one to add to your list when staying at iKhayalamafu - good food, good coffee and another lovely way to spend a leisurely day exploring the Central Drakensberg.

Here's what iKhayalamafu looks like after 55 mm of rain☔

Our natural rock pool is overflowing and the once gentle stream is full and gushing furiously.

The Berg after a proper downpour is really quite special.

Everything looks greener, the waterfalls come alive and right now the sound of rushing water carries through the property. There's nothing better than sitting with a cup of tea by the fire looking out at the misty forest 🍃 while listening to the soft calls of the little Swee Waxbill🎵

Just a short walk from the cabins, and the world gets a whole lot quieter 🍃

Find a spot beside the stream, bring a flask of coffee and settle in while the Drakensberg wakes up around you. The sound of running water, bird calls, leaves rustling overhead... nothing beats a quiet morning in the forest🧘‍♀️🍵
