🐢 Did you know? Witsand’s coastline is part of an important sea turtle rescue network. 🌊
Sea turtles occasionally wash ashore along the Witsand and Infanta coastline. Loggerhead hatchlings can be carried south by the Agulhas Current into colder waters, where they may become weak and strand on Western Cape beaches. Witsand has also seen some remarkable visitors over the years, including green turtles and even a critically endangered hawksbill turtle.
The Lower Breede River Conservancy Trust works with the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Turtle Rescue Network to help stranded turtles found in our area.
If you’re lucky enough to spot a stranded turtle while exploring Witsand, don’t put it back into the ocean. A stranded turtle may be cold, dehydrated or exhausted and needs specialist care. Contact the local Turtle Rescue Network so it can be assessed and rehabilitated. 🐢💙
