LUCKY BASTARDS AT KAROOLSKRAAL

Oi! Bastards! Do you feel that slight nip in the air? That means we are approaching the end of the Cape saltwater season, but fear not! The fishing has not tapered off just yet with solid catch reports coming from our contacts who live there.

Lucky Bastards have secured a prime slot at Karoolskraal Saltwater Fly Fishing Camp on the Breede River where we will be fishing for Grunter, Leervis (Garrick) and Kob. The leervis fishing at this time of year tends to switch on as they feed more aggressively before migrating up the coast, while the grunter are ever-present on the mudflats and you always stand a solid chance at getting a kob off the ledges.

Don’t dither. Secure your spot now!

Hang on…who?

We (Andre van Wyk and Platon Trakoshis) have partnered up as Lucky Bastards to bring you the best fly fishing experiences in places we know and love. From South Africa to Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Seychelles and Oman, every destination Lucky Bastards goes to, is an area that we have experienced first-hand from our own fishing trips over the years.

Seasoned fly anglers, with tons of global fly fishing experience between us, we know exactly what goes into a great trip - from choosing the best conditions to getting expert advice from local gurus, to cracking open a cold beer at just the right time. We have both spent decades working in the service film industry so we understand the world of logistics and luxury, personalities, pressure and professionalism (and retaining a sense of humour throughout). Combine that career experience with our own personal preferences for what makes the perfect fishing trip and you have not only the ingredients but also the recipe for an unforgettable fly fishing experience every time you decide to become a Lucky Bastard and take a trip with us.

Where – Karoolskraal

Arguably the best saltwater fly fishing destination in South Africa, the Breede River is an incredibly special place and Karoolskraal Saltwater Fly Fishing Camp is the jewel in the crown. Situated in a sheltered hollow on a private farm only 200m from the water with excellent fishing spots right in front of the camp, in less than five minutes from booting up you can target Spotted Grunter and Steenbras tailing on the mudflats or head to the rocky ledges for kob and leervis.

Accommodation is in comfortable (you can stand in them) canvas tents, with one man per tent. Meals and drinks will be had in the communal central area and on one of the nights we will be having a moerse braai. All you need to bring is towels, sleeping bags/pillow, drinks and fishing gear.

While we will be right there to give you tips and some excellent fly tying demos, we also have guest angler Conrad Botes joining us, a legend on the Breede fly fishing scene. Together we will be giving tips and advice on how to fish, the best tides, when to fish for what and what flies to use. We will be fishing alongside you if you have any questions or need a hand in any way. We will also have our cameras at the ready to capture you in action and get that special shot of your memorable fish.

We will be fishing early in the morning and into the early part of the evening when targeting kob, so prepare to get your night fishing skills on. This trip is timed leading into spring tide, so conditions will be perfect for that chance at a fish of a lifetime.

What are you waiting for?

Come be a Lucky Bastard with us.

Today a week ago 3 guys arrived in camp. Within a short time, I realised this trip is going to be different.
They came prepared and were confident. All they needed as a bit of luck. In fly fishing, when these 3 factors come together it usually leads to something spectacular.
And it did!
1 Steenbras, 1 Elf, 3 Garrick and 13 Grunter.
11 Grunters in one-afternoon session. A Double hook up and many “on offs “
Thanks, Pete, Chris and Brad. It was an honour to host you.

ISSUE ● 25!

https://themissionflymag.com/issues/issue-25/?portfolioCats=32

Onwards and upwards into 2021, we present to you a chock-a-block mag featuring:

- The Feathers Award. From massive fresh and saltwater fish, to species never caught on fly before and some amazing stories, there were some incredible entries tho this the inaugural competition. Unfortunately, like Duncan McLeod of Highlander fame, there can only be one. The judges have spoken.
- Talking of big fish, we’ve got former Springbok Bob Skinstad giving us the low-down on a recent ‘Tour de Cosmo’ with Alphonse Fishing Company. Not everything that goes on tour, stays on tour.
- As for oddities, look no further than ‘When the River Ran Red’ when Gareth Tate and Craig Pappin lucked into reef-dwelling santer in a southern Cape estuary.
- For a change of temperature, we have Thrift three ways (not to be confused with a Thrift threeway which sounds like a cheap o**y). This includes a story by Neil Hiestermann, featuring David Taylor, Michael Pyle and the RUFFC (Rhodes University Fly Fishing Club); a brief interlude by Ed Herbst on Eastern Cape trout stocking legend Martin Davies and a second story by LeRoy Botha on a Thrift trip he did with Kyle Ovens.
- For something a little smaller, we dive deep into the Drakensberg as Matt Gorlei and Shaun Dickson go in search of wily rainbows in ‘Injasuit Muti’.

Then there’s Flycastaway guide Brendan Becker’s story about his grandfather, fly fishing and the circle of life, a High 5s with the nicest fly fishing guide you will ever meet in Platon Trakoshis, a Lifer with futurist Clem Sunter, The Little Guy with Mama Alles, books from Tom Sutcliffe Fly Fishing, Bitterkomix and Rebecca Giggs, drinks from Red Rock Brewery, Thorne and Daughters and Crabbie Whisky, a Country-ish playlist of tunes and a ton of gear.

Rejoice brethren and sister for no matter what 2021 dishes up, at least you still have The Mission.

Issue 25 is live, available freely online for our fans all over the world, while free print copies are on their way to stores, clubs and airport lounges across Southern Africa.
