Could this be South Africa’s highest EV charging point?

Perched at 2,220 metres above sea level, the EV charger at Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge must surely be one of the most scenic places in the country to plug in!

Who says electric vehicles and mountain adventures can’t go hand in hand?

We’re curious. If you drive an EV, would you bring it up into the Drakensberg for a mountain getaway?

A welcome in song, straight from the heart. Our Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge team welcomed Kingsley Holgate and the Following the Dragon Expedition yesterday with voices that belong to these mountains. A joy to have you here!

How old were you when you remember your first real hike in the mountains or wilderness?

That first adventure that became a core memory. The one that, perhaps without you knowing it at the time, got you hooked on wild places.

Have you ever wondered what it might feel like to walk through a portal?

At Witsieshoek, perhaps you can.

There is a place, just beyond the lodge, where the ridge falls away and the mountains begin.

Walk towards it.

A few steps more, and the lodge disappears behind you.
The voices fade.
The roads are gone.

And suddenly, there is nothing between you and the mountains.

Only grass moving in the wind.
Great walls of ancient stone.
A sky that seems impossibly wide.

You have not walked far, and yet somehow, you have arrived somewhere else.

Perhaps that is what wild places do.

They do not ask us to escape the world.

They simply remind us how large it is.

WHAT SECRETS ARE STILL HIDDEN IN THE QWAQWA MALOTI?

We walk these mountains. We photograph them. We stand in awe of them.

But how much do we really know about them?

This August, Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge is delighted to welcome **Professor Ralph Clark**, Director of the Afromontane Research Unit at the University of the Free State, for a special evening presentation:

**Unveiling the Mysteries of the QwaQwa Maloti – A Journey of Scientific Adventure in a Poorly Studied Part of the 'Berg**

From remarkable plant diversity and mountain ecosystems to scientific exploration in some of southern Africa's lesser-known high-altitude landscapes, Prof. Clark will share stories and discoveries from a career spent researching – and adventuring through – the mountains.

If you love the Drakensberg, hiking, nature or simply discovering more about the wild places around us, this is an evening we'd love you to join.

📅 **Friday, 28 August & Saturday, 29 August**
🕠 **17:30**
📍 **The Kgotla, Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge**
☕ Tea & coffee available

The presentation will run for approximately **30 minutes**, with time afterwards for questions and an informal discussion with Prof. Clark.

Come for the mountains. Leave knowing them a little better.

❄️ A winter wonderland at Witsieshoek this morning! ❄️

The mountains woke up under a beautiful blanket of snow, making for some spectacular views around the lodge. ☃️🏔️

By the time a snowman has acquired sunglasses, gloves, a blanket and a hat, you know Witsieshoek has taken its snowfall seriously.

A generous fall of snow has transformed the lodge and the surrounding mountains into a wonderfully unfamiliar landscape. Beautiful, bitterly cold and a fine excuse for a little mountain silliness.

The road to the Lodge is open, but slushy and slippery. The last section to the Sentinel Car Park is closed and impassable. Want to get to the Chain Ladders? You will have to hike from the Lodge.

These are the days we remember.

❄️ Snow update from Witsieshoek
11 August 2026 ❄️

The mountains have had a beautiful blanket of snow, but perhaps a little more than we bargained for! ☃️

Heavy snowfall yesterday made the road to Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge impassable, and while we had planned to start clearing the road today, the snow has started falling again. For now, our clearing equipment will have to wait for the weather to give us a gap.

If you were thinking of heading up to Witsieshoek today or tomorrow, please hold off for the moment and keep an eye on our page for an update. This includes day visitors and hikers as well as overnight guests.

We hope to have a clearer picture by around 15:00 today and will share another update as soon as we know when the road can safely reopen.

And the good news? Once the road is clear and safe, there should be a wonderful snowy Drakensberg waiting to be enjoyed! 🏔️❄️

For now, enjoy the snow from afar and we’ll let you know when it’s time to come and see it for yourself.
