This time of year (from May into June), the Lower Zambezi brings cool, clear mornings that open out into warm, bright days, with plenty of action around.

For some, being by the river means experiencing the Zambezi in all its might. For you, it can look a little more like sharing the water with these gentle giants 🐘

This sub-adult male found himself separated from the rest of the pride and climbed a fallen tree in Kulefu to get a better vantage point while calling out for the others.

A lion’s roar can carry up to 8 kilometres and reach around 114 decibels, making it the loudest call of any big cat. And for this young male calling out in an area like Kulefu, where winterthorn forest shapes much of the landscape, that sound does not travel in quite the same way it would across open plains, but it is still an incredibly effective way of communicating with the rest of the pride.

A male lion who knows his territory.

With water levels low, crossing the channel becomes a far easier job, but judging by the way this Brutal Boy is moving, you get the sense he would have come through undisturbed either way.

Let’s take a walk from the Amanzi Main Area to Room 3!

With four tents spaced out along the riverbank, camp is laid out to give each room a real sense of privacy without ever feeling disconnected. The river is always your focal point, with the main area opening out over the Zambezi and the rooms extending naturally along its course.

Meet Nathan Mwetse ()

Nathan has now been in the safari industry for 16 years and guiding for 11, so while he may be new to Amanzi, he is certainly no stranger to the Lower Zambezi. His first introduction to the park came on a school visit with Conservation Lower Zambezi, a trip that sparked both his love for wildlife and the path that led him into guiding.

His favourite animals are baboons, because in his words, they are always active, always interesting, and often end up helping guides by showing where predators might be. As for favourite parts of the park, he loves the east of the Lower Zambezi, especially the winterthorn forest.

And yes, he once found a pangolin too, around two years ago. Join us on safari and maybe he will find one for you as well 😉

Did you know Zambia is home to the largest hippo population in Africa?

When the water is low, it’s easy for them to find shallow spots in the main river. Considering the amount of time they spend in the river, you may also be surprised to hear that hippos do not swim. They run across the river bed and push themselves up when they need some air.

After having denned on the western side of the park last year, the Jeki Pack returned briefly, pausing to rest near their old den beyond the plains for which they are named. After swiftly taking down an impala, they continued east with what appears to be a new, pregnant alpha leading the way! It will be interesting to see where they den and how the pack develops this year.
