While the photos are from Luambe NP, not Munyamadzi, they show the awesome work carried out by BirdWatch Zambia and Andre Botha of Endangered Wildlife Trust, supported by our partner BioCarbon Partners - BCP.

Three white backed vultures were geotagged at Munyamadzi in August this year. One of the birds had flown 200km in the first 24hrs after being tagged, showcasing how important this kind of work is to filling the gaps in knowledge regarding these incredible creatures.

We look forward to more vulture conservation work with these partners in future and will continue keeping Munyamadzi a Vulture Safe Zone.

Happy World Giraffe Day 🦒

Here's a post by our partners in conservation, Lion Landscapes , who have recently teamed up with Giraffe Conservation Foundation to address some of the unknowns about Luangwa giraffe at Munyamadzi and in the Lower Luangwa Valley.

Book your next safari with us now to directly benefit this critical conservation work for the world's tallest mammal.

Formerly known as the Thornicroft’s Giraffe or Rhodesian Giraffe, the Luangwa Giraffe was recently classified as a subspecies of the Masai Giraffe based on DNA data.

Despite being an icon of the Luangwa Valley in Zambia, the geographic distribution of the subspecies has just been updated to include the Lower Luangwa Valley by our field ecologist based at Munyamadzi Game Reserve.

Working with our local partners, the first individual identification catalogue of Luangwa Giraffe will be created for the southern-most part of the subspecies' range, using over 4,000 images collected since 2017 from various sources. This will assist in long term monitoring of the subspecies and any future work to establish updated population estimates.

As we commemorate World Giraffe Day today, we are eager to raise awareness of the challenges facing the tallest animal in the world and what we can do to protect the species in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley. This will be made possible through our partnership with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, private wildlife reserves, the operators in the Game Management Areas, Zambia’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife, and BioCarbon Partners - BCP.

We are excited that our records, and that of our colleagues at Lion Landscapes, have led to this fantastic partnership to increase what science knows about the Luangwa Giraffe.

Book your safari at Munyamadzi now to further contribute to conservation, community and research.

Giraffe conservation is a team effort! We continue to build new partnerships to help us gain a better understanding of giraffe numbers and their range. Most recently we have partnered with Lion Landscapes in Zambia to learn more about the range of the unique Luangwa giraffe. Through this exciting collaboration, we have already significantly increased the known giraffe range in the country as their field researchers have recorded giraffe in areas far outside their previously reported range. Stay tuned for more exciting news from Zambia in the coming months!

Incredible journey by wild dog, who stopped through Munyamadzi and were literally opposite camp.
The importance of unfenced wildlife areas cannot be overstated - this is exactly why the Lower Luangwa Valley is such a crucial place to protect. Our scouts have done a fantastic job at securing the property for the benefit of all wildlife, local or just passing through.
Visit us to see for yourself just how special the Lower Luangwa Valley is.

Today is World Wildlife Day, the theme this year is "restoring key species for ecosystem restoration."

Resilient, functioning ecosystems require species redundancy - without one block the whole tower could collapse in the right circumstances.
That's why we need to protect ALL organisms, from soil fungi to grass, megaherbivores to carnivores, insects to birds.

In the Lower Luangwa we pride ourselves on the absence of fences which allows us to safeguard natural migration routes of large mammals, such as Luangwa giraffe, elephant and wild dog, while implementing appropriate fire management protocols to protect the soil and plants. We're protecting the whole picture because we understand the complexity of nature.

Vibrant wet season greens contrasting with grey clouds and the blue of our infinity pool.

The Luangwa River is getting dangerously close to flooding again and the access road is very difficult to traverse with flash flooding streams and sticky mud patches. This is why we are closed during the wet season.
