The International Labour Organization (ILO), together with the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment and other partners, joined the nation in commemorating 2026 under the theme: “Accelerating Zambia's Climate Action for Green Growth and Sustainability.”

The Sustainable E-Waste Management Project, which is being implemented by the ILO with support from the People of Japan, together with E-Tech Recycling raised awareness on the importance of responsible e-waste management and the dangers of disposing e-waste together with other forms of waste, which often ends up in landfills and poses serious risks to the environment and public health.

The project is empowering young people with knowledge and skills in sustainable e-waste management, recycling practices, green entrepreneurship, and the creation of decent green jobs. The initiative also promotes environmental sustainability, resource recovery, and increased awareness on the safe handling and disposal of e-waste.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment - Zambia Dr. Douty Chibamba, graced the event as Guest of Honour. In his keynote address, he emphasized the importance of this year’s World Environment Day theme and called on all Zambians to work together in protecting the environment and building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Zambia for all generations.

Dear Comrades and Members,

The Zambia Union of Financial Institutions and Allied Workers (ZUFIAW) aligns with this statement by the Director General of the International Labour Conference (ILO) and advances that Artificial Intelligence Policies must be developed in an engaging and consultative manner. Unions as key stakeholders must have an input to ensure that the interests and rights of workers are fully protected.

AI must NOT be used by Employers as a tool to disadvantage human labour and maximize profits instead it should be a tool for effective and enhanced of productive.

ZUFIAW, remains ready to dialogue with government and employers to ensure that the interests of our members are prioritized in the formulation of these policies and most importantly ensure that our members are fully supported by the employer for them to upskill and reskill. We will play our part to ensure our members are well aligned with the rapid changes in the world of work and the need for them to remain relevant by embracing AI as a tool for efficiency and effectiveness.

Did you know that in 2022, Zambia generated over 22 million kilograms of electronic waste (e-waste), yet less than 1% was formally collected and recycled?
This growing challenge threatens our environment, our health, and the future of generations to come.

As we commemorate 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝟓 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, in collaboration with the 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, is raising awareness on the importance of responsible e-waste management and sustainable recycling practices.

Old phones, broken computers, damaged cables, and other electronic waste should not end up in dumpsites. Proper disposal and recycling can:

• Protect our environment
• Reduce pollution and health risks
• Create green jobs and opportunities for young people
• Promote a cleaner and more sustainable Zambia

🇬🇭🤝🇿🇲 Strengthening skills development through Ghana-Zambia collaboration

The exchange mission between the EU-Ghana Pact for Skills Project and Zambia’s Skills Development for Increased Employability Programme (SDEP) continues to foster meaningful collaboration and knowledge-sharing among key stakeholders from Ghana and Zambia.

Supported by the European Union (EU) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), the initiative provides a platform for both countries to exchange experiences, share best practices, and explore opportunities to strengthen skills development for increased employability.

Today, the delegation participated in a Private Sector Engagement Forum held at the Zambia Institute for Tourism and Hospitality Studies (ZITHS) in Lusaka.

The forum featured sector skills development sessions led by sector skills bodies in mining, energy, agriculture, and tourism.

Speaking during the engagement, Mr Zechariah Luhanga, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, hailed the partnership between Ghana and Zambia, highlighting the gains Zambia has made in skills development and the importance of continued collaboration in building a skilled, employable, and competitive workforce.

We are excited to launch the Exchange Mission between the EU-Ghana Pact for Skills Project and Zambia’s Skills Development for Increased Employability Programme (SDEP)! 🇬🇭🤝🇿🇲

This initiative, supported by the European Union (EU) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), brings together key TVET stakeholders from Ghana and Zambia to share experiences, learn from each other, and strengthen collaboration in skills development.

The exchange will focus on:

✅ Enhancing skills funding mechanisms
✅ Promoting work-based learning and private sector engagement
✅ Advancing green and digital skills for the future of work
