Water on the skin. Stillness on the lake. Power in every stroke.

The Swim for Nsumbu isn’t just about distance — it’s about presence. From first light on Lake Tanganyika to the final steps back onto shore, this swim is shaped by nature, community and purpose.
These moments remind us why we do it. Wild, untouched waters. Swimmers pushing personal limits. A shared commitment to conservation.

Why do we swim for Nsumbu?

Because Nsumbu National Park is still little known and it protects extraordinary biodiversity — from Lake Tanganyika’s unique freshwater life to recovering wildlife populations on land. Through the Nsumbu Tanganyika Conservation Programme, a partnership between the Department of National Parks and Wildlife and Frankfurt Zoological Society, long term conservation is restoring ecosystems and supporting the people who protect them. The value for tourism of the area has great potential, and increasing this will bring tourism-based income and jobs to communities, increased national park revenue streams and will encourage government to invest in much needed infrastructure to grow the lake-side economy.

Swim for Nsumbu is more than a sporting challenge — it’s a shared commitment to safeguarding this landscape and investing in future generations who rely on these natural resources for their livelihoods. A big thank you to our sponsor Mudpackers Zambia (silver sponsor) for backing conservation where it matters most.

Swim skills, teamwork and resilience were on full display in last weekends' Swim for Nsumbu 💪

Twelve DNPW scouts showcased their skills over two teams this year, showing improvement from last year’s times. From experienced open water swimmers to first time relay participants, every team brought focus, preparation and determination to the water. Careful pacing, smooth handovers on 30-minute intervals and support from safety boats ensured a successful and inclusive swim for all involved – the youngest swimmer being 7 years old.

Events like Swim for Nsumbu wouldn’t be possible without behind the scenes support — from boats and fuel to equipment and supplies. Thank you to Autoworld Limited (silver sponsor) for helping keep swimmers fuelled, safe and supported throughout the challenge.

15 kilometres across open water.
The longest lake in the world.
An ancient rift valley lake of astounding biodiversity.
One shared finish line.

Swimmers tackled the 15km Swim for Nsumbu in relay format, navigating endurance, changing conditions, and long hours on the water to complete the course in 6 hours and 45 minutes. That tracks a pace of 27 minutes per kilometre.
From smooth transitions between teams to steady pacing and constant safety support, the swim showcased not just physical strength, but trust, strategy, and collective effort — all in support of protecting Nsumbu.

Each year the length of the swim changes and is swimmer centred on the skills of those who participate. Next year, the swim will be held during the school holidays on the 17th April to allow greater inclusivity for those who wish to join in. Contact us for more info and let’s start planning!

Many thanks to our logistics and safety supporters, including Niner Juliet Logistics and VF Aviation (Silver Sponsors), who helped make a demanding open water swim possible.

We did it! 👏
The Swim for Nsumbu 2026 set out with a fundraising goal of K90,000 — and thanks to the generosity of swimmers, supporters and partners K91,700 was raised, officially reaching (and surpassing!) the target.
These funds directly support the Nsumbu Tanganyika Conservation Programme, helping to support this much anticipated event, strengthen ranger motivation and welfare and the long term protection of Nsumbu National Park and its surrounding landscape.

Huge appreciation to our sponsors who made this possible, especially Royal Air Charters (Gold Sponsor) for standing behind conservation in action and helping to make a real difference to community lives and conservation here on the ground (and sky!)

What an incredible weekend on Lake Tanganyika 🌊

Swim for Nsumbu 2026 brought together 30 swimmers and many more support crew, 4 relay teams, and a shared commitment to conservation. Together, they took on 15km of open water, finishing the challenge in 6 hours and 45 minutes — an achievement powered by teamwork and determination.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who swam, supported, volunteered and cheered from the boats and shoreline. This year we had the best supporters yet! Events like this remind us of what’s possible when conservation and community come together.

With grateful support from our event partners - with special mention to Isuzu Zambia Action Auto Zambia (Gold Sponsor), our longest standing supporter throughout the years. Your contributions and commitment to conservation and community have been integral to the longevity of this event which has been running more than a decade, bringing much needed attention the conservation efforts in Nsumbu.
