The Chisa Busanga Camp Story
Chisa Busanga Camp (“The Nest”) lies on a beautiful island in the heart of the Busanga Plains, Kafue National Park, Zambia; overlooking vast flood plains and dambos that teem with wildlife. The flood plains are mostly inaccessible from November to May as rainfall causes the water level to rise and turns the plains into a flooded paradise. As the water levels subside a vast floodplain crisscrossed by a network of small tributaries is exposed. Accessibility returns in May, making Busanga a seasonal destination, open from June-November. Its remoteness and the most remarkable sunrises as mist rises from the drying floodplain guarantee a magical experience. Signature sightings for this area are tree climbing lions and the red lechwe leaping the small streams. Plentiful Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, buffalo and wildebeest provide for some of the best predator (cheetah, wild dog, lion and leopard) action anywhere in Africa. For the practicing ornithologist, the park boasts a number of endemics, such as Chaplin's barbet, amongst over 450 other species.
Chisa Busanga Camp (“The Nest”) features the local Nyanja word for “Bird’s Nest” in its name. A fitting title for a camp drawing inspiration from the weaver nests found in the area into its architecture. Four human sized birds’ nests have been raised up into the tree tops, blending into their surroundings and offering great views out over the flood plains. Following the example set by Ila Safari Lodge, Chisa Busanga Camp offers the Silent Safaris product. All game drives will be operated on electric game drive vehicles, using top of the range safari conversions, all solar-powered. The Silent Safari experience boasts greater game sightings, closer birdlife interactions and the sounds of the bush; all without the constant rumble nor carbon emissions of a diesel powered safari.
Access to Chisa Busanga Camp (“The Nest”) is best by plane from Lusaka (1.5 hours) and can be combined with a flight into Ila Safari Lodge (60mins) and a transfer to Chisa Busanga Camp (30mins). Combining the two camps in a journey is highly recommended as it provides the opportunity to experience two very different ecosystems within the pristine wilderness of the Kafue National Park. The stunning location of Ila Safari Lodge on the banks of the mighty Kafue River, in the heart of the park, gives a memorable marine experience. The exclusivity and ultimate remoteness of the Busanga Plains makes it an unforgettable destination in which to track the largest cheetah population in Zambia. Access to both camps can also be arranged via road transfers (3 to 4 hrs for each transfer).
