Here's how we turned old pool fencing into our new bush track entrance! 🌿
We will plant the Flame of the Forest vines to climb over the arbour, plant gingers, palms around the area, some bright coloured crotons for a vibrant tropical look and ferns to soften it. What's your favorite DIY projector around your garden?

We have a real soft spot for orchids here at Paperbark Retreat!

One of the things we love most about our tropical garden is watching nature do its thing. Some of our orchids grow naturally on the trees around the property, and this season they've put on the most beautiful show of flowers. It's such a pleasure to wander around the garden and discover what's blooming — little reminders of just how special it is to live surrounded by nature.

Did you know that many tropical orchids are epiphytes? That means they grow on trees rather than in the ground. Their roots anchor them to the bark, absorbing moisture and nutrients from rain, the air and the organic matter that collects around them. They don't harm the trees they grow on; they simply use them as a place to call home!

Orchids are fascinating plants, too. Their unusual shapes, colours and patterns have evolved to attract specific pollinators, making each flower a little masterpiece of natural design.

And then there's the striking red orchid in our video! We picked this beauty up at the Yungaburra markets, and it certainly makes a statement. In a tropical garden full of lush green foliage, that splash of red really stands out. There's something about those bold colours against all that greenery that makes you stop and take a closer look.

It's these little things that make gardening so rewarding — the unexpected blooms, the new discoveries and the simple pleasure of watching nature flourish around us.

💧 Wujal Wujal Falls – much more than a waterfall

There are some places in Cape York that you visit for the scenery… and then there are places where the landscape carries thousands of years of story.

Wujal Wujal is one of those places.

The name Wujal Wujal comes from the local Kuku Yalanji language and means “many falls”, reflecting the many waterfalls found throughout this beautiful Country.

But these falls are much more than a spectacular sight. They are part of the traditional homelands of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people and hold deep cultural significance.

Many of the waterfalls in the area are reserved for female members of the local community, with only designated areas open for visitors. It is a reminder that this is not simply a place of natural beauty — it is Country with deep cultural meaning.

For thousands of years, the Kuku Yalanji people have lived with an intricate knowledge of this rainforest Country — its rivers, seasons, plants, animals and waters. That connection with Country continues today, with knowledge and stories passed from generation to generation.

So when we stand here watching the water rushing over the rocks, we're not simply looking at a waterfall.

We're looking at Country, culture and living history.

This is one of the reasons we love sharing Cape York with our guests. There is always another layer to discover when you take the time to look, listen and learn.

There’s always something happening at Paperbark! 🌿

If we’re not looking after guests, you’ll usually find Tony and I somewhere in the garden, dreaming up the next project. 😂

This time, we’re building an arbour to create a link between our gardens and our bush tracks. We’re planting Flame of the Forest vines to climb over it, so eventually it will become a beautiful, leafy entrance into the bush. 🌺🌿

And then there’s me… the ideas person! 😜

I suggested we use the old pool fencing to build it. Why buy something new when you can repurpose what you already have?

I LOVE repurposing things!

At Paperbark, nothing is ever quite finished. There’s always another idea, another garden project and usually a few things Tony has to build because I’ve had an idea! 😂

But that’s what makes Paperbark ours — it’s always growing, changing and becoming something new. ❤️🌿
