One year ago today, we rolled into Argadells Station to begin a new chapter in the Flinders Ranges.

What a year it’s been! A year of extremes, challenges and plenty of hard work. But most importantly, a year of meeting some incredible guests and school groups who have passed through our gates and stayed with us throughout the season.

We thought it would be nice to share some behind the scenes action from the past year - the good, the challenging and everything in between.

Who knows what next year will bring? We can’t wait!!

We love this photo from a recent guest who stayed with us at Argadells.

There is still plenty of time to squeeze in an outback trip to the Flinders Ranges before the season ends.

🚙 Travelling through the Flinders Ranges and Outback? Book your station stay ahead to avoid missing out!

One of the best things about travelling through regional South Australia is the freedom to explore at your own pace — but when it comes to staying on a working station, a little planning goes a long way.

Our Station Stays SA properties are unique, remote and often have limited accommodation and camping sites. With growing demand, many properties are now booking out well ahead, particularly during school holidays and long weekends. Contact the station in advance and secure your spot.

By booking ahead, you can:
✅ Make sure there’s a place waiting for you
✅ Avoid disappointment after a long day on the road
✅ Help our station hosts plan for your arrival
✅ Give yourself more time to enjoy the experience

🤠 Once you’ve booked, please remember that every station has its own way of doing things. These are working properties, so please take a moment to read the property information, respect the station’s rules and arrive within the nominated check-in times. If your plans change or you’re running late, contact your host as soon as possible.

A little consideration goes a long way in helping our station hosts provide a safe, enjoyable experience for everyone. So, if a station stay is part of your next adventure - please plan ahead, book your destination before arriving and remember you are staying at someone's home so respect their rules.

We had the pleasure of welcoming the longest serving Argadells owners this week - Ian Smart, along with his daughter Rosie and her husband, Warren.

The Smart family owned Argadells Station from 1958–2004, so it was pretty special to have them back and hear some of the stories from their time here.

Ian shared stories of carving out some of Argadells famous 4WD tracks with his old Fiat bulldozer, including some rather hairy trips up Mount Arden and down the very steep and technical Blue Track!

Rosie and her siblings certainly had a wonderful upbringing here, swimming in the gorges, riding their horses throughout the property and growing up with Argadells as their backyard.

At 89 years young, Ian is still as sharp as ever and it was fantastic hearing the stories behind so many of the tracks and places we know today.

Thanks for coming back to Argadells, Ian, Rosie and Warren. It was great to meet you all and hear a little more of Argadells history from those who lived it. We hope to see you again! ❤️

Did you know part of the Heysen Trail runs through Argadells?

A popular stretch of the trail is between Dutchmans Stern and Buckaringa, with plenty of spectacular Flinders Ranges scenery along the way.

And after a day or two of walking, what better way to finish than setting up camp at Argadells.

We love seeing Heysen Trail walkers passing through and making the most of this beautiful part of the country.

It might be a widespread pasture w**d, but Salvation Jane (Echium plantagineum), also known as Paterson’s Curse, certainly puts on a fantastic purple show here at Argadells . 💜

The name Salvation Jane comes from South Australia, where farmers used it to feed sheep during harsh droughts when other pasture had died off.

Elsewhere, it earned the name Paterson’s Curse, reportedly after the Paterson family planted it in NSW and watched it spread across farming land.
