Tucked away in a hidden location just off the main Bondi strip, there is a speakeasy bar that has built its reputation almost entirely on word of mouth. Cosy and sophisticated, with a vintage atmosphere and a cocktail menu that takes its craft seriously, it is the kind of place that rewards the people who go looking for it.

It is not the sort of bar that needs a sign out front. Ask a local, find it yourself, and order slowly.

Bondi has plenty of places to drink. Very few of them feel like a genuine discovery.

Most people pay hundreds for a Sydney Harbour cruise. Locals do the same thing for the price of a bus ticket.

The F1 Manly Ferry runs from Wharf 3 at Circular Quay every twenty minutes, taking thirty minutes to cross the harbour and passing the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Fort Denison and Garden Island along the way. The fare is just over eight dollars with an Opal card.

Sydney Tourism Guide:

Once you arrive, grab breakfast from Sonoma on the pier or walk the path to Shelly Beach, which sits inside a marine reserve and is one of the best snorkelling spots in Sydney. Bring your own mask or join a guided tour from the beach.

Sydney Expert:

The return journey at dusk, with the city coming into view across the water, is one of those Sydney moments that doesn’t need any embellishment.

Most people plant themselves on the sand and face the water. The locals who know better walk up to the South Bondi Headland, where the view opens up across the entire length of the beach and the sky turns colours you can’t quite describe to someone who hasn’t seen it.

With its grassy slopes and panoramic ocean views, South Bondi Headland is an ideal spot to relax and watch the sky change as the sun sets. It takes ten minutes to walk up from the main beach, and you will almost always find a quiet patch of grass to yourself.

Bring something to drink, sit with your back to the suburb, and let the Pacific do what it does best at dusk.

If you’re after a dinner that actually feels like an occasion, RND at Harry’s on Campbell Parade is the answer right now. Hidden inside Harry’s, this sleek Japanese izakaya serves some of the freshest sashimi and sushi in Sydney alongside crispy tempura, steamed gyozas and hibachi grilled mains, finishing with a mochi bomb dessert that earns its reputation.

It has its own identity, its own entrance, and the kind of atmosphere that makes a Tuesday feel like a weekend. Open every night except Mondays.

Book ahead. This one fills up fast, and for good reason.

Bondi Beach is where Australian surf culture lives, and there is no better place to take your first lesson. Let’s Go Surfing on BondiSurfern end of the beach runs beginner lessons daily, with instructors who have been teaching people to stand up on a board at this exact stretch of sand for years.

Two hours, a foam board, a wetsuit, and the particular satisfaction of catching your first wave at Australia’s most famous beach. It counts for something regardless of how gracefully you manage it.

Beginners are always welcome, and the instructors are genuinely good at what they do.
