Jokimaja Boutique-hotel Jokimaja. Charming farm in Scandinavian style. 8 cozy rooms with artistic touch

Our guests often ask us why we created summer-inspired rooms in a hotel that only opens in winter.

The answer is simple - because Lapland is so much more than snow☃️

Every summer reminds us that we made the right choice by bringing a little piece of this beauty into our hotel.

Two of our rooms are dedicated to this season: Kesä, which means Summer in Finnish, and Juhannus, inspired by the Finnish Midsummer celebration that is already being celebrated this week.

The midnight sun, bright nights and endless green forests are just as much a part of Lapland as snowy winters and Northern Lights.

Because Lapland inspires us all year round🌿

Would you visit Lapland in summer too? 🇫🇮☀️🌱

Summer has always been project season at Jokimaja🌿🌼🌞

While winter is busy with guests, summer is when we finally get time to build, improve and bring new ideas to life💫✨

Last summer, we transformed an old storage room into our yoga and meditation space. Looking back at the photos, it’s amazing to see how much changed in just a few months…

This summer, we’re continuing the work behind the scenes. One of the next steps is bringing water and utilities to the area to make it more comfortable and functional for future use. It may not be the most photogenic part of the process, but it is one of the most important.

And this is just one of several projects planned for this summer.

Jokimaja has always grown step by step, season by season. We are looking forward to sharing the progress and a few surprises along the way😉

Stay tuned🌿

Everyone knows Lapland in winter ❄️

But every year, when the snow melts and the midnight sun returns, we are reminded why we love summer here just as much.

While Jokimaja takes a seasonal break from welcoming guests, summer is actually one of our busiest times. We spend long days outdoors, pick wild berries and mushrooms, work on improvements around the property, and plan new ideas for the seasons ahead.

The pace is different. Slower. Quieter.

The river keeps flowing past the hotel, the forests turn green, and the sun stays with us almost all night.

There are no snowy landscapes or northern lights, but there is something equally special about sitting outside at 11 PM in golden sunlight and listening to nothing but nature around you.

Winter may be the most popular season in Lapland.

But summer might just be the most underrated one ☀️

Have you ever experienced the Midnight Sun?

Yesterday, after a long time, I finally went on a hike again with one of my sons and his beautiful dog Blue. Here in Switzerland, we are already getting almost summer vibes. It feels so good to be back in the country that is my home for many years.

But suddenly, when we came across the first remaining patches of snow, I felt a little homesick for Lapland - homesick while being at home.

It was beautiful to watch Barney and Blue enjoying the snow so much. Those two are always fully present in the moment.

Do you know that feeling - when more than one country feels like home to you?

At Jokimaja, we are always searching for experiences that help people slow down in a deeper way😌

My journey with sound began long before I consciously found it.

As a mother of three sons, I started exploring holistic therapies at an early stage. I was always deeply interested in finding ways and methods that could support self-help in everyday family life - and later also benefit the clients in my own practice.

After training in Bach flower remedies🌸🌿and energy work according to Erich Körbler, I came across sound healing almost by chance. At that time, I was searching for something that would go deeper - something that did not feel like therapy (although it can certainly be used therapeutically), but rather something accessible to people of all ages and capable of creating deep, lasting relaxation🧘🌿

One day, close friends told me about their first experience with singing bowls, and I was immediately fascinated and deeply touched. I knew I wanted to experience this special effect of sound - and these wonderful bowls - for myself as soon as possible.

In 2006, I attended my first weekend seminar in sound massage at the Peter Hess Institute in Germany. This experience moved me profoundly and inspired me to continue learning through various courses and advanced trainings, eventually qualifying as a Sound Therapy practitioner in 2011.

Over the years, sound has become more than a practice for me - it has become a way of creating space where people can simply slow down, breathe, and reconnect with themselves beyond the noise of everyday life.

This is also why bringing sound experiences to Jokimaja feels so natural. Surrounded by the stillness of Lapland, the river nearby, and the quiet rhythm of nature, Jokimaja offers the kind of environment where sound can be truly felt - not only heard. Here, the experience becomes more than relaxation, it becomes a moment of calm and presence.

Would you like to experience this during your stay at Jokimaja?

Water has always been part of life here.

At Jokimaja, we live beside a moving river, with our own natural water source on the land. It is something we hear every day, something we feel around us, and something that quietly shapes life here🤍

Even our name, Jokimaja, means house by the river in Finnish🇫🇮

And perhaps our connection to water goes deeper still - it is also within us.

Our bodies are made mostly of water, and water carries vibration remarkably well. That may be one reason sound can feel so deeply physical - not only something we hear, but something we experience throughout the whole body.

This is what makes singing bowl meditation so special.

Gentle tones become soft vibrations, helping the body release tension, slow down, and settle into calm.

I would love to share that experience with you.

On the return journey in April from beautiful Finnish Lapland back home to Switzerland, there was plenty of time to reflect and exchange thoughts — and suddenly, water became an important topic 😌

As a frequent traveler and as a host at Jokimaja, I often notice that water and its quality are recurring questions.

Many guests at my boutique hotel — and even visitors staying in the Levi area — ask:
🔹Is the water safe to drink?
🔹Should we drink it from the tap, or is it better to buy bottled water?

Thinking about this again made me realize that it’s not something to take for granted. Even within Europe, it’s not always possible to drink tap water everywhere. That’s why I’m almost a little proud to have our own water source and to serve our guests water of very high quality every day — with a truly great taste.

Sometimes it’s the simplest things that make the biggest difference 💙

After closing the doors of Jokimaja, the long journey home begins once again. It always feels light in words – yet it also means saying goodbye to a winter full of experiences, life, and my temporary home away from home.
This time I’m lucky to have my sister Birgit with me. Together we cover the 2,225 km ahead, planning stops, discovering small new places, and making the journey as pleasant as possible.
When I’m not driving, I turn the car into a mobile office – letting the season settle while already catching up on post-season work. And as always: after the season comes the next one. Often, it starts right here – somewhere between the road home, coffee breaks, and miles passing by.
And so the planning for Jokimaja winter season 2026/2027 has already begun, long before the first snow falls. ❄️

Season 2025-2026 at Jokimaja has come to an end…

It has been a very special season for us. We built new things slowly, step by step - adding small details, trying new ideas, and learning along the way.

Some things found their way back to us - like our gate, which has always been a symbol of this place. We also added name signs to each building, all written by hand✍🏻

We spent many warm evenings together with our guests, even on the coldest days - adding little rituals like cold dips after the sauna, sharing new recipes, and sitting by the fire in the kota👩‍🍳🔥

One of the most meaningful parts was restoring the old house and turning it into a calm space for yoga and meditation.

Thank you to all our wonderful guests who trusted us, to everyone who supported us, and to all Jokimaja lovers whose kind words and beautiful photos showed us that we are on the right path ❤️

This season we did not have the snowiest winter ❄️ but we had something just as special - quiet moments, soft light, and truly beautiful Northern Lights ✨

We are already looking forward to opening our doors again in December 2026 🤍
