Today we did something very different during our stay in the Peak District — we went to prison for lunch! 😳

Just a short drive from The Old Post Office is HMP Sudbury, a Category D open prison where lower-risk prisoners, many approaching the end of their sentences, are given opportunities to gain valuable skills and experience in preparation for life after release.

The site itself has a fascinating history. It was originally constructed as a hospital for the United States Air Force for the D-Day landings before being converted into a prison in 1948. Some of those original single-storey hospital buildings are still used to house prisoners today.

The restaurant is staffed by prisoners working under the guidance of a trained chef — and with main courses costing just £6, it makes for a very affordable and certainly memorable lunch!

If you’re staying with us at The Old Post Office, this is one of those wonderfully unusual local experiences that’s only a short drive away and definitely gives you a story to tell when you get home.

September really is my favourite month of the year in the Peak District. 🍂 The children are back at school, the towns and attractions are a little quieter, and it feels like the perfect time for the grown-ups to come out and play! Gather your friends and escape to The Old Post Office for a few days of walking, exploring pretty villages, cosy pub stops and enjoying everything the Peak District has to offer. We still have some September midweek availability, making it the perfect excuse for a little escape while everywhere is that bit more peaceful. Then, when the day’s adventures are done, head back to the cottage, open up our little Gin Shed, pour yourselves a drink and settle into the cottage garden for a wonderfully relaxed evening together. September in the Peaks… I’m not sure it gets much better than that. 🌿🍸🍂

Bank Holiday escape to the Peak District? 🌿 Are you looking for a cosy cottage with private parking, a friendly village pub within walking distance and plenty to see and do nearby?
