We are, after all, England’s historic pie house!

At the Old Exeter Inn, we take our pies seriously. Homemade, generously filled and packed with flavour, served with all the proper trimmings. Think mash or beef dripping chips, crackling, Yorkshire pudding, seasonal vegetables and our rich port gravy.

From our signature Steak & Ale to Chicken, Ham Hock & Leek, Royal Game and Orchard Pig, there’s plenty to get your teeth into.

But we’re not just about pies!

We’re also keeping good old-fashioned British cooking alive, with traditional favourites including fish & chips cooked in beef dripping, bangers & mash, Old Exeter faggots, hearty beef cobbler and plenty more.

Wednesday is getting its old name back.

Long before it was Wednesday, it was Woden’s Day — named after Woden, the Anglo-Saxon god whose name Wednesday still carries today.

And here at the Old Exeter Inn, we rather like keeping old things alive.

So from tomorrow, Wednesday becomes WODEN’S DAY at the Old Exeter Inn — and we’re giving you a rather good reason to remember it:

We’re used to our beautiful old inn being photographed and filmed — but painted? Wow. 🎨

Artist Laurie Peters first got to know Dartmoor as a young Royal Navy engineer, and the Old Exeter Inn stuck in his mind. Now he has captured it in watercolour, and we couldn’t be more thrilled.

“It has real character,” says Laurie, “the sort of building that immediately feels as though it has stories attached to it.”

It was meant to be a quick food stop on a long journey. He stayed almost all evening.

On his first visit to the Old Exeter Inn, he thought it looked stunning and full of history from the outside. What delighted him was that the feeling carried through every detail inside. He loved the ambience and said he felt completely relaxed.

He settled in with our steak & ale pie, mash, a Yorkshire pudding, a sausage on the side and a glass of w**e. Later, he discovered the secret garden lit up at night.

Before he left, he told us it was the best pub he’d ever been in. And now he’s looking at holding an artists’ event here.

Some quick stops turn into rather lovely evenings. 🍷
