You may have caught me over the weekend on the Sunday Politics show with Martyn Oates discussing the proposal of holiday lets and second homes requiring planning permission.

I have covered this in this week’s article, explaining while I see some logic, now is just not the time to legislate until we have reliable data from the anticipated Statutory Registration scheme. While it is not the register we wanted with compliance certificate upload, it will still give us, for the first time, a better overview of holiday let numbers, any cluster areas, and we can analyse this before any policies are implemented. It is far too simplistic to put blame on holiday homes and second properties for the housing crisis. It is so much bigger than that.

We want to get towards year round, sustainable tourism, that works with local communities - and policy makers collaborating with the tourism sector so we don’t lose jobs and cause further damage to our very delicate eco-system.

Remember - ‘If we have data, let’s look at data. If all we have is opinions, let’s go with mine’ (Jim Barksdale)

My mantra will always be the same, get the data first, then carry out an impact assessment, then collaborate with the sector - then decide if you need to legislate.

While the National Register is coming, it’s a complete soft touch which is not what we campaigned for - there is no document upload and no mandatory enforcement from the local councils. People can self certify that they comply - with essentially no consequence.

While I see some logic in the proposal from the Lib Dem MP, we must get data first before we legislate. There has already been this issue in Scotland where jobs were lost, houses sat empty and nothing changed to the housing. We need to address what ‘affordable housing’ means - in a county where wages are low and property prices are high.

However you cannot put the blame on one sector - when it creates so many employment opportunities and contributes massively to our local economy. It is a much wider socio-economic issue that we need to address in Cornwall.

The announcement of a temporary VAT reduction on children’s meals and tourist attractions over the summer months will be welcomed by many families and businesses across the UK. At a time when household budgets remain under pressure due to the cost of living, any measure that reduces the cost of a day out feels practical, targeted and politically responsive.
However, beyond the immediate benefit, the policy also reveals something more significant for our sector: a quiet recognition from this Labour Government that taxation directly influences visitor behaviour, spending patterns and the overall health of the tourism and hospitality economy.
