The announcement of a temporary VAT reduction on children’s meals and tourist attractions over the summer months will be welcomed by many families and businesses across the UK. At a time when household budgets remain under pressure due to the cost of living, any measure that reduces the cost of a day out feels practical, targeted and politically responsive.
However, beyond the immediate benefit, the policy also reveals something more significant for our sector: a quiet recognition from this Labour Government that taxation directly influences visitor behaviour, spending patterns and the overall health of the tourism and hospitality economy.

Sharing my 40th Birthday with International Woman’s Day - this weekend has been a good one!

As a woman in business I will try my hardest to honour the women who laid the foundations for us to flourish, and I hope I can continue to break more barriers for women in tourism for the future. Despite still having many more milestones to reach, I will never take for granted how far women have come.

And as for my 40th…..another 365 days around the sun growing as a business and as a person. So truly grateful for all the support and new connections along the way. Here is to the next decade!

A week of events celebrating our industry at the South West Tourism Alliance dinner and later discussing our business challenges with at a very well hosted and meticulously planned tour with PASC UK

These events always remind me of how many wonderful and passionate voices we have in our sector. Tourism and hospitality are not easy jobs. They are hard work, and sometimes for little profit. Yet we all seem to love it. That tells you something about the people who work in it - they genuinely love their careers and want to make paying guests/customers happy. We need to value these people and businesses, and work with them.

I listened to a great podcast the other day - it said - if you get hospitality right, and everyone is out eating, drinking, travelling around the UK, then the economy is doing well. So if the Government takes care of hospitality, we will handle the rest.

I tend to agree.

Last guests are in, we got that tricky boiler fired up and all the other issues that poked their ugly heads were resolved before Christmas! I hope all our wonderful staff, owners, agencies and guests have the most glorious and restful break.

I’m going into Christmas with a full heart after a rather epic 2025. It has been a challenging year for self-catering, and tourism as a whole. We’ve had the removal of FHL since April, NIC, EPC threats, followed by the catastrophic business rates from this Autumnal budget. However the business we’ve done, tasks we’ve achieved - it’s been monumental. PASC UK as normal have been terrific.

We lost Visit Cornwall during the year but did gain our first Tourism Councillor, which is a step in the right direction.

I have spent a huge proportion of this year lobbying, writing, screaming from roof tops and having several rather awkward conversations with people blaming the housing crisis on the industry I love and cherish. It’s been a mix of highs and lows - but always battles without surrender before adaption and steps forward, even when they are heavy and small.

CSC is now thriving and getting ready for full throttle come January - and I am thankful for the fellow founders - Emily Phil Shane and George

The steering panel at the Council for our future Destination Management Organisation has created new relationships and collaborative bonds - I cannot wait to see how we develop in the New Year.

What makes me happiest is the team effort Cornwall is now putting in. Businesses are fighting together. We are sharing data, telling our stories and standing up for what is a brilliant Brand Cornwall - that we will keep preserving and protecting, as well as showcasing to the world.

Have a Merry Christmas my friends, see you New Year side for more hard work and our next set of challenges.

PS - Thrilled for our today. Cornwall relies on you and we need you in the tourism sector. Hope this has made Christmas that one bit easier. Well done lobbying efforts

How Fixers do Christmas…..

On Sunday morning Katie featured on BBC News Politics South West discussing issues our tourist industry faces such as legislative changes and tax increases for all our small businesses, as well as self catering properties and the housing crisis.

It was interesting to watch the debate afterwards with Luke Pollard, Roger Tarrant and Caroline Voaden and wishes she could have been there!

During filming they talked about statutory registration and how key this is to our sector to contribute to the housing issue. It would allow us to get the data of how may actual lets there are, raise the standard of health, safety and compliance - and also keep the ‘good owners’ in the business.

We are a chain - and the average spend shown in recent surveys shows that guests at holiday home properties staying over one week spend £700 on top of the property rental. This goes to our attractions, restaurants, local traders and more. Holiday homes are very important to the tourism economy.

We all appreciated the difference between second homes and holiday lets being highlighted today.

We want to work with politicians to be part of the solution and not considered the ‘problem’.

Looking forward to more engaging conversations and thank you again to Lucie Fisher and Martyn Oates for the opportunity.
