In 1868, Crieff Hydro was built on a simple belief: that fresh air, movement and water can do you good. Guests came for the water treatments and the Perthshire hills, a prescription pharmacies couldn't write.

Today the Crieff Hydro Padel Barn carries that spirit forward, bringing one of the world's fastest-growing sports to Crieff. Inside our three brand-new indoor padel courts, the energy of the game meets the calm of the hills that surround us.

Today we celebrate what would have been John Leckie's 90th birthday.

John's connection to Crieff Hydro began during his childhood when his father, Gordon Leckie, became Managing Director after re-opening the hotel following World War II. John initially trained in agriculture and worked on the Hydro's Culcrieff Farm - now home to some of our self-catering lodges and known as Culcrieff Village. When he was just 23, his father developed a terminal illness, and John was encouraged by his family to step into the business and fill the leadership gap.

He went on to lead the hotel for 42 years, overseeing major developments including the self-catering chalets, squash courts, a second swimming pool, a sports hall, a bowling green, and a new 42-bedroom wing. His stewardship helped transform the hotel into the modern family resort it is today.

Away from the hotel, sailing is where John belonged. Out on the water, there was no agenda to run and no one to manage. Just the boat, the wind, and whatever stretch of coast he'd chosen that day.

Happy 90th birthday, John.
