Over the years, the façade of Hotel Café Royal has seen a few changes. Pillars have disappeared, windows have evolved, and the addition of our iconic dome has made its mark on the London skyline. But perhaps the biggest transformation of all is what lies behind the doors.

Since opening in 1865, we’ve been many things: a social hub for London’s great and good, a bank, a fire station, an event space and a gathering place for artists, writers and royalty alike.

✨Asparagus season✨

This week at Hotel Café Royal, we hosted Future of Food: Café Royal Grill x Spilman Farm - a celebration of British produce, sustainability, and yes… asparagus in every delicious form imaginable. 🌱

Guests joined us in the historic Café Royal Grill for a five-course asparagus-led dining experience, where every dish showcased the incredible versatility of one of the season’s finest ingredients.

We were thrilled to welcome Tom Spilman himself, who took guests on the journey from farm to table, sharing the story behind asparagus farming, harvesting, and sustainable growing practices straight from the source.

Throughout the evening, our Culinary Director Kevin Gratton led table conversations around seasonal cooking, responsible sourcing, and why supporting British producers matters more than ever.

Amazing food, inspiring conversation, beautiful wines, and a room full of people passionate about the future of dining — the perfect recipe for a memorable evening.

New kid on the block… and it’s got Banksy written all over it 👀

If you’re strolling down Regent Street St James’s, don’t miss the latest surprise drop, right at the end, in the middle of Waterloo Place.

Overnight, a brand new sculpture appeared (classic Banksy move), showing a suited figure marching forward… except there’s a twist: a huge flag is blowing back over his face, completely blinding him.

Set among historic statues of kings and war heroes, this one hits differently, bold, modern, and already sparking debate.

No big announcement, no warning - just art popping up in the heart of London, just another of quirk of being in an iconic city 🇬🇧

Did you know… these walls once hosted boxing matches? 🥊

Long before our lobby welcomed guests for morning coffee and our breakfast balconies were filled with the clink of teacups, these very spaces once echoed with the roar of boxing crowds.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Café Royal was home to legendary bouts hosted by the National Sporting Club, one of Britain’s most prestigious boxing institutions.

Some of the sport’s biggest names stepped into the ring here, including world heavyweight champion Bob Fitzsimmons, as well as celebrated fighters like Georges Carpentier and Ted Kid Lewis, who drew fashionable London crowds eager to witness the drama unfold.

The club also played a major role in shaping modern boxing culture, championing the now-famous Queensberry Rules, which helped formalise the sport as we know it today.

Today, the gloves are gone and the ring has long disappeared, but the history remains. Where fighters once battled under bright lights, guests now gather in our elegant lobby and breakfast rooms, perhaps unaware that beneath their feet lies a remarkable chapter of London’s sporting history.

Proof that at Hotel Café Royal, every corner has a story - and some of them once packed quite a punch. 🥊✨

London’s St Patrick’s Day 2026 Parade is back Sunday 15th March! 🇮🇪🍀

The luck of the Irish passes right by our door, one of London’s most colourful celebrations marches through the heart of the city and it happens to pass right outside Hotel Café Royal.

Highlights include:
🥁 Vibrant floats and marching bands
💃🏻 Irish dance troupes
🎭 Spectacular pageantry

The parade starts at 12pm and makes its way from Hyde Park through Piccadilly Circus and along Regent Street St James’s before reaching Trafalgar Square.

Did you know Piccadilly Circus Station first opened on 10 March 1906?

Built by the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway (a forerunner of today’s Underground), it began by serving the Bakerloo line before becoming a key interchange when the Piccadilly line platforms opened later that same year.

From day one, its location at the iconic junction of Piccadilly Circus made it one of London’s most important stops - connecting visitors and locals alike to the bright lights of the West End 🎭🛍️
