A Little Note About The Road Closure ♥️♥️♥️

We weren’t informed about the overnight road closures, so they have come as rather a shock to us too.

The High Street is being closed for resurfacing works from 8pm until 6am on the following nights:

Thursday 27 August
Friday 28 August
Tuesday 1 September
Wednesday 2 September
Thursday 3 September
Monday 7 September

The Three Cups is still open as normal and you can still get to us on foot. You can park at either end of the High Street and walk through to the pub.

Please don’t let the road closure put you off coming. We would be very grateful to see you, roadworks and all! ♥️♥️♥️

From Swimming Pools to Beetle Drives ♥️♥️♥️

When my sister and I arrived in Stockbridge, it was quiet.

We’d come from Australia. Swimming pools, beaches, BBQs and what felt like endless sunshine. Always something to do.

Then suddenly we were here.

And there really wasn’t much going on.

But we weren’t very good at doing nothing.

So if anything was happening, we were in.

Didn’t matter what it was.

If someone was organising something, we’d find it and join it.

And we didn’t just go once.

We went every time.

One of those things was the beetle drive in Stockbridge Town Hall.

I think it was organised by the WI.

And there we were.

Two 10-year-old girls.

They didn’t seem to mind us being there.

We loved it.

I’d forgotten this until now…

The only reason we ended up in the Church of England choir at all was because they were short of people.

They knew we were Catholic.

Didn’t seem to matter.

We just made up the numbers.

And while we were there, some of the lady volunteers who arranged the church flowers taught me how to do them as well.

I only went because I liked them.

They were kind and lovely.

Funny really, because I still arrange flowers now without even thinking about where I learnt it.

No one thought any of it was strange.

We were just 10.

And looking back, I think that’s probably where hospitality started for me.

Not behind a bar. Not pulling pints.

Just turning up, joining in and being made to feel that you belonged.

All these years later, I suppose I’m still doing much the same thing.

Only now the room happens to be a pub. ♥️♥️♥️

I Was Watching The People Watching The Eclipse ♥️♥️♥️

I really thought we’d be busy tonight.

Beautiful evening, an eclipse and a pub with a garden.

We weren’t.
But the atmosphere was brilliant.

I wasn’t really watching the eclipse.
I was watching everyone in the garden trying to watch it.

Everyone had been told not to look directly at the sun.
Which meant some did.

I imagine there are a few people tonight with two great big shining lights still bouncing around in front of their eyeballs.

Some of the others had a different idea.

Phones came out.

Bits of card.

Then I looked out and someone had a colander.

No idea.

And it wasn’t just happening in the garden.

People coming into the pub were telling me they’d seen people lining the streets and standing outside their houses, all doing exactly the same thing.

Everyone looking up.

I loved that.

Something happening in the sky had made everyone stop what they were doing and come outside together.

Then it was over and everyone came back inside and gathered around the bar.

The next total eclipse we’ll see in the UK isn’t until 2090.

I don’t think many of tonight’s crowd need to worry about making plans for that one. ♥️♥️♥️

It’s Been A Couple Of Days Now… and and ♥️♥️♥️

It’s been a couple of days now since Trout ’n’ About, and I’ve been thinking about it.

If anyone’s interested, this is what goes into planning a day like that.

People see Trout ’n’ About.

We see about a week’s worth of planning.

The freezer starts filling up with extra bags of ice. Then comes the annual debate…

“How many burger buns did we buy last year?”

Nobody can quite remember. Last year it looked like rain, so that doesn’t help much.

The staff rota suddenly triples.

The chefs take charge of the BBQ.

The front of house team take charge of the outside bar, serving drinks, collecting glasses, clearing tables and keeping everything moving.

The card machines get tested.

Every year we hope they’ll behave.

Every year they don’t.

The bubble machines need batteries.

We forgot to buy them.

We still managed to find enough.

Before 10 o’clock, the residents cars have to be out of our car park because, for one day only, it becomes the outside bar.

The BBQ is dragged out the front.

The gazebo goes up for the band.

The extension leads come out…

Then we need another one.

The wobbly tables get sorted.

Another fifteen or so tables somehow get squeezed into the garden.

The float gets counted.

The staff briefing begins.

Then, at about 9.30, I walked into the kitchen.

The chefs didn’t look anywhere near ready to be cooking a BBQ outside in half an hour.

I looked at them with that expression on my face, is there any chance that you will be ready.

“Are we really going to pull this off?”

Without missing a beat, they smiled.

“Don’t worry, Lucy… we’ll be ready.”

And they were.

At exactly 10 o’clock, the BBQ was fired up and serving its first customers.

Meanwhile, breakfast was still being served to a full house, the breakfast room needed clearing and twelve bedrooms still had to be cleaned.

Then the first visitors arrived.

The music started.

The food just kept coming.

The queue at the bar just kept growing.

A few people tried to barge in, but our front of house team stayed calm, kept smiling and kept everything moving.

One thing that made me smile was seeing so many of our locals wearing their new Three Cups shirts.

It hadn’t been organised by us.

They’d organised it themselves.

By the end of the day we were exhausted.

Not because anything had gone wrong. It had gone right.

Days like Trout ’n’ About aren’t about extension leads, burger buns or bags of ice.

They are about these people…
The hard working Chefs, our front of house team, musicians, customers and most of all …
Our locals

If you’ve made it this far… thank you for sticking with me. Long story. Long day. ♥️♥️♥️
