During the construction of Villa Atlas *Eola in 2020, the contractors hit something unexpected: a large formation of calcite crystals in the ground. Rather than remove them, the floor plan was redrawn around them. The villa stands on top of the crystals.

We mention this not because it is mystical but because it says something about the attention behind this project. Nothing here was done the easy way.

Atlas has three separate apartments — two on the ground floor, one above — which makes it unusual among villas of this size. Six bedrooms across the three, two hot tubs, a 47.5 m² pool, custom-made furniture, designer lighting and artwork by well-known local artists throughout. The exteriors are minimalist: olive trees, palm trees, rosemary, a grill and outdoor dining on both levels.

The beach is within walking distance. So is the town of Jelsa. There is even private parking for four cars in the garage.

The story of Villa Eos starts before it was a villa.

The stone houses near Humac were built in the early 20th century for agricultural workers — a place to rest from the fields, to get out of the midday sun and sit by the fire when the winter came in. The estate sat in the middle of the island’s countryside, surrounded by cypress, lavender, sage, rosemary and olive groves and it stayed that way for decades.

In 2006, it was carefully restored. Solar panels went in. A private water source. An infinity pool was added, facing south towards the sea and the islands beyond. There is antique furniture alongside contemporary pieces. A courtyard bread oven. A tennis court. A dining table for 12 under the open sky.

The agricultural workers are gone. The fields are still there. Humac village is three kilometres away and has barely changed in a century.

The village of Brusje sits high on the northern ridge of Hvar, looking out across the water towards Stari Grad and Brač. Sunrise House is on that ridge.

There are five king bedrooms across a restored three-storey main house and a separate two-storey annex connected by stone pathways and archways.

Choose from three fully equipped kitchens. A 36 m² infinity pool built into the terrace above the Adriatic. Original stone floors, exposed beams and French doors opening onto sea-facing balconies on every level.

A wraparound terrace on the annex has the best views on the estate. There is a wood-burning barbecue. A shaded pavilion with a daybed for the hours when the sun is at its strongest.

Hvar Town is ten minutes away by car. From the pool terrace, it doesn't register as a fact worth acting on.

Jelsa sits in the middle of the island, tucked between the sea and the island's two highest peaks, St. Nicholas to the west and Hum to the east.

It was founded in the 14th century as a ship port for the village of Pitve, grew into a shipbuilding and maritime centre, peaked in the 19th century and has been doing its own thing ever since.

The baroque chapel of St. John anchors an octagonal square that hasn't changed since the 17th century. The parish church of Sts. Fabian and Sebastian was fortified against the Ottomans in the 16th century; its neo-Renaissance facade was added 200 years later for the wedding of Emperor Franz Josef I and Empress Elisabeth.

The Tomić family w**ery and Ivo Duboković's w**e cellar are both worth an afternoon. The island's only genuine sandy beach is two kilometres away.

It is one of our favourite towns on the island and we think it will be one of yours, too.

There is a small workshop in the heart of Stari Grad run by a family who started it out of love - for the island, its food and the traditions that tend to disappear when nobody takes the time to teach them.

Paprena Butiga is led by Viktorija Čolić Majić, a pastry and cooking professional who devoted her food technology degree to the paprenjak, a spiced biscuit shaped and decorated by hand using an old technique called cukarovonja that is specific to this island.

The workshops celebrate paprenjak, part of Croatia’s UNESCO heritage, aromatic cviti and a Greek cake recipe reconstructed from archaeological discoveries of ancient Faros.

Rather than simply visiting Hvar, this experience invites you to connect with the island through its flavours, skills and traditions passed down through generations.

Villa Vinea was designed by Studio 25.4mm and won the BIG SEE Architecture Award 2025.

The interiors are by Nikàrt, whose products throughout the house received the German Design Award for Excellent Product 2026. These are not details the owners added for marketing purposes but the result of building something properly, on cliffs above Sveta Nedjelja that the owners first saw in 2017 and spent years figuring out how to live on.

The villa has four bedrooms across three levels. The master suite has a freestanding bathtub and a cantilevered terrace shaped like a ship's bow, pointing towards Šćedro. The basement holds a w**e tasting room and the first bedroom, which looks out towards Vis.

The ground floor opens entirely to the sea through floor-to-ceiling glass. There is a solid oak dining table, linen sofas, brass accents and Bang & Olufsen speakers. A private vineyard beside the house. A herb garden on the terrace. The beach is 200 metres away.

This is what happens when people who fell in love with a place build something worthy of it.

The internet is calling it nonnamaxxing. On Hvar, it has always been fjaka.

Fjaka is the Dalmatian word for the particular pleasure of doing nothing, on purpose, without apology.

That could mean a coffee that carries on to cocktails. A lunch that becomes the entire afternoon. An evening walk with no end.

The konobas were built for it. The stone squares were designed around it. The pace of island life here is not a choice you make — it is something the place makes for you, if you let it.

The island has been practicing fjaka for centuries. It does not need a trend to validate it.

Vrboska is one of the most genuinely beautiful small towns on Hvar. There is a narrow sea channel, stone bridges, fishing boats and two historic churches facing each other across the old quarter. Villa Lesina sits between them.

Completed in 2021, the villa spans 440m² across three levels, with four bedrooms designed around colour and light, each with its own en-suite.

Every summer, guests ask us which beaches to visit on Hvar. We always give the same answer: the famous ones are famous for a reason, but the ones we love most are the ones that take a little more effort to find.

Veli Dolac, which is unpretentious and gorgeous and almost never crowded. Zečja, where Majda's mother swam as a child and where you still meet locals from the surrounding villages rather than tourists from the boats.

Molo Zaraće, with its stone steps carved into the cliffs and the small church above the shore. Mala Milna, where Dinko's restaurant has a wonderfully retro atmosphere and where a small old-fashioned taxi boat still runs to and from Hvar Town like something from another era.

And Dubovica, which everyone knows but which means something different when you have actually lived there.

This is Hvar as we know it. The beaches that belong to the people who grew up here and that we share with every guest who asks.
