Sincere condolences to Sean O’Se’s family and friends.
Ballylickey has lost another son: this one charmed the country with his voice and all of us locally, with his song ‘the Strands of Ballylickey’ . I wasn’t able to find his rendition of it online, but indeed we all heard it over the years down the road, in the Ouvane, where Sean performed so many times. But equally lovely and poignant is Sean’s rendition of Bantry Bay.
And he will be at rest, overlooking Bantry Bay.

Update on the Shelduck Juvenile who charmed us all at summers end ❤️

As winter sets in, and the wild migratory wading birds take over the point, I thought I should update those of you who were here at the end of August and may have met a Shelduck juvenile who arrived at Eagle Point, out of the blue. It was perplexing at first, in fact this little duck was so friendly, we thought someone had dropped off a pet duck! Several small children got very attached to their ‘duck friend’.
The details in his leg ring however solved the mystery. Quakkers, ( as he got named during his 3 weeks ‘all inclusive’ here.. he was well fed by everyone), had come from a rescue, He had been rescued as a chick and then when mature enough, released somewhere near Cork with other shelducks. Quakkers though somehow got separated and decided to go on his holidays to Eagle Point.
Quakkers was returned to the rescue in early Sept so that he can over winter in safe environment and will be released again in the future with other Shelducks when it is suitable.
So a happy ending : we know he is safe and will get another chance to be rewilded.

Take the ferry .. that alone is a treat .. right from the pier to beach and to the airstrip… a chance to see the airstrip .. a real working small planes airstrip.. a place most people don’t even know exists in Bantry, and enjoy one of the highlights of the calendar .. our own agricultural show. There won’t be any flights coming in .. the strip is taken over with all thing agricultural ❤️
