In Luang Prabang, Phou Ngeu and Nya Ngeu are revered as ancestral guardian spirits of Pi Mai Lao (Lao New Year). Believed to be mythical creators and protectors of the city, they appear only once each year, on the second last day of the old year, in a vibrant procession from Vat Aham to the Nam Khan River. Portrayed by male mediums in red masks and white fiber costumes, their presence symbolizes protection, prosperity, and continuity for the year ahead. This tradition remains one of Luang Prabang’s most distinctive New Year rituals.
